🔎 Why does this study matter?
Myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) is increasingly recognised as a potential contributor to poor performance in horses, yet its clinical and functional consequences remain poorly understood. This study takes a step towards understanding MPS from different perspectives by combining clinical palpation, AI-based gait analysis, and The Ridden Horse Pain Ethogram (RHpE).
The findings suggest that experienced palpation remains an important tool for identifying thoracolumbar MPS, while AI-based gait analysis and behavioural assessment should be considered complementary tools that may help us better understand the functional expression of pain.
Ultimately, this study supports a multimodal approach, integrating clinical, biomechanical, and behavioural information rather than relying on gait symmetry or behavioural signs alone.

🚨 A major step forward in equine sports medicine: a landmark study on equine thoracolumbar myofascial pain syndrome.

🔎 Why this study matters?
Thoracolumbar myofascial pain is increasingly recognised as a clinically relevant source of pain that can negatively impact equine welfare and performance. However, it remains underdiagnosed, and the scientific evidence available in horses is still limited.

In this study, we present, for the first time:
🔹 A set of clinical diagnostic criteria based on the latest advances in the understanding of myofascial pain in humans.
🔹 The development and evaluation of these criteria in a large population of 120 horses, providing a robust foundation for their clinical application.
🔹 A machine learning-based framework to support clinicians and researchers in the recognition of equine thoracolumbar myofascial pain syndrome.

We hope this work serves as a foundation for future validation studies, provides clinicians with practical diagnostic tools, and promotes the routine inclusion of myofascial pain in the differential diagnosis of equine musculoskeletal disorders, ultimately advancing both clinical practice and research in equine musculoskeletal medicine.

Tuvimos la oportunidad de presentar nuestro trabajo enfocado en el dolor miofascial y la biomecánica equina.

Un evento inspirador, lleno de ponentes destacados y conferencias enriquecedoras, que fomentaron un maravilloso intercambio de conocimientos entre médicos y veterinarios especializados en medicina deportiva y rehabilitación.

Fue un placer reencontrarme con colegas y especialistas de toda Europa.

[ESP] Ayer tuve el placer de impartir una charla sobre rehabilitación y medicina integrativa equina a los alumnos de mi querida Facultad de Veterinaria de Zaragoza. Muchas emociones de volver a mi antigua facultad y muy agradecida a todos los asistentes y en especial, a los miembros de la Asociación veterinaria Equina , por su invitación. Enhorabuena por toda la labor que hacéis y por apostar y promover la educación en otros campos emergentes y tan necesarios en nuestra profesión.

[ENG] Yesterday, I had the pleasure of giving a talk on rehabilitation and equine integrative medicine to the students of my beloved Veterinary Faculty of Zaragoza.
