Apso Do Khyi or Zhan Shi (Goat-Haired Lion Dog)
An even lesser-known variant of the Tibetan Mastiff is the long-haired one, or rather "goat-haired," which is what the term Apso means.
Here are some photos of the Apso Do Khyi, sometimes referred to as the Tibetan Khyi Apso.
Little is known about these dogs; some claim they are a true local variety, typical of southwestern Tibet (Mount Kailash), while others believe they are crossbred with dogs known in the West as Tibetan Terriers.
Their size is less than that of the Do Khyi of the highlands, and their overall build is robust but not imposing; very few of these specimens have been imported to the West.
The Apso Do Kyi was particularly favored by Buddhist monks in the numerous monasteries throughout Tibet, but they could also be found in the homes of Tibetan nobles or in more humble dwellings, where they were considered beloved companions and trusted sentinels.
Compared to the Tibetan Mastiff, the Tibetan Kyi Apso has a lighter, shaggier coat, a bearded muzzle—without drooping dewlaps or excessive facial wrinkles—, long, furry ears, relatively long legs, a leaner body, and a fully curled tail.
This breed is considered medium-sized—generally between 60 and 65 centimeters at the withers—and weighs around 50 kg. Their coat is usually black with lighter-colored extremities, although other colors, including gray, brown, and red, can occur.
The Tibetan Kyi Apso has a characteristic rhythmic and harmonious gait and its movements instinctively bring to mind an athlete who covers his path with strength and elegance... With an independent character, it is very intelligent, alert and energetic but particularly stubborn and territorial; it is also instinctively wary of strangers and aggressive towards intruders.
