“That’s exactly his face. His smile.”

I stopped Linda and Tom on the sidewalk and asked to take one photo of their golden. Twenty seconds later they were looking at Rusty’s portrait — and they had no clue I work for the company that makes them.

So I asked for their address and sent the big canvas. A week later, this is what showed up at their door 🥹

Rusty is 9. Still moves like he’s 3. Still steals chickens.

That face says: “maybe if I freeze, they’ll forget I’m here” 🤣

He kept score. He still lost. 😭🐶 🐾

Otis was an Old English Sheepdog — a hundred pounds of grey and white hair with no visible eyes, who spent fourteen years lying across the porch steps so that nobody could come or go without stopping to say hello to him first.

The photographs are all from before phones got good. Grainy, slightly out of focus, and there are perhaps thirty of them altogether. That is the thing nobody mentions in advance: at some point the album stops, and whatever you have is what you have.

One of those thirty is a painting now. Watercolour is forgiving of an old photograph — the softness does some of the work a sharper lens would have done, and it suited him.

It sits on the hallway shelf, with his collar folded beside it.

Three bloodhounds — a young liver-and-tan, a grown black-and-tan, and an old boy with a grey muzzle.

Same watercolour treatment across all three, and they still read as three completely different dogs. That's the thing about the breed: the ears, the wrinkled brow and the jowls carry so much character that no two of them look alike once you actually stop and look.

Upload one photo of yours and see the preview free. You only pay if you love it.

Anyone who lives with a Vizsla will tell you the colour is the whole dog. That deep rust gold, somewhere between copper and cinnamon, and slightly different on every single one of them. Get it wrong and what you have is a generic brown dog with long ears.

These are three different Vizslas — a young one, an old boy going grey around the muzzle, and a dark copper one — given the same watercolour treatment. The rust holds on all three, and so does the age difference, which is the part that usually gets flattened out.

You see the painting first, free, and only pay if it's right.

Nero is seven, weighs about ninety pounds, and has never once held still for a photograph. Everything I have of him is motion blur and a bit of ear.

I took the least blurry one and had it turned into a watercolour painting. It came back in about a minute. Free to see — I only paid once I was sure I wanted it on the wall.

It's by the front door now, which is where he posts himself every time somebody knocks. Seemed like the right spot.

Gus is a hundred and eighty pounds of Saint Bernard. He takes up a full sofa, leans on people who have not consented to being leaned on, and sheds enough in a week to build a second, smaller dog.

The canvas turned up in a flat brown sleeve. Inside was a gallery-wrapped canvas about an inch deep, the painting continuing around the sides, ready to hang with no frame to go and buy. It took about a minute to get it on the wall.

So now there are two of him in the living room. Only one of them sheds.

Rio is a Bengal, which in practice means he treats the house as a series of surfaces to be crossed at speed. I have hundreds of photos of him and nearly all of them are a blur with rosettes on it.

There is exactly one where he stopped — on the windowsill, watching something outside. I uploaded that one and watched it come back as a watercolour painting in about a minute. Free to see. I only paid once I was sure.

The markings held, which was the part I doubted most. Cats are harder than dogs this way: the pattern is the animal, and if the pattern goes soft it stops being your cat.

He's on the wall by the window now, about a foot from where he was sitting.
