Before you teach your adopted dog one command, watch your dog.

New adopters, this is the first skill to learn.

A puppy you raised gives you years to learn their signals. A newly adopted dog gives you weeks, sometimes days, before you have to decide: a new person, a new dog, a car ride, a vet visit.

Stiff. Panting. Tail tucked. Avoiding eye contact. Each one says something, as clearly as a relaxed dog does. The skill is noticing the quiet version before it becomes the loud one.

Nobody told me the first weeks with a rescue dog would be this hard.
Here’s what I wish someone had said:
Needing help doesn’t make you a bad pet parent.
Bringing a new dog home is a huge transition, for you and for them. Behavior challenges in the first weeks are common, and getting rescue dog training support early can make all the difference.
Asking for help is not failing. It’s how you give your dog the best chance at a forever home.
If you’re a new rescue dog owner, you’re not alone.

Your rescue dog panics when you leave? It is not your fault.

If you just adopted a dog, this one is for you.

The ACVB names shelter dogs as a higher risk group for separation anxiety, because they may have been left abruptly with no chance to adjust. It is not a flaw in your dog. It is not something you did wrong.

What helps: start with your vet. Then very short departures, slowly lengthened, with a stuffed food toy in every practice session. A we**am can show you what happens while you are away. No punishment. Crating often makes it worse.

Several anxiety patterns or a severe case need a veterinary behavior specialist.

Choosing the right dog trainer matters, especially for a rescue dog.

Before you hire anyone, ask three questions.

One: do you put safety before obedience?
A scared dog can’t learn.

Two: what do you do when my dog gets it wrong?
Avoid any trainer who talks about dominance, being the boss, or correcting with fear.

Three: how will you work with my dog’s fear or stress, not against it?
Good training meets your dog where they are.

It doesn’t create a perfect dog. It creates a dog who feels safe and an owner who feels supported.

Save this before your first trainer call.

Day 3 can feel like the longest day. The bowl sits there and the worry grows.

Not eating can have many reasons, so if it keeps going, call your vet.

The pet industry is worth over $300 billion globally.

And the organisations that feed it are running on volunteers and Facebook Messenger.

Here's what I mean.

Every time a rescue dog gets adopted, the pet industry gains a customer. Someone who will spend thousands of dollars over the next decade on food, vet visits, insurance, training, grooming, boarding, toys, and everything else that comes with a dog in the house.

The rescue created that customer. The shelter screened the family, matched the dog, processed the paperwork, and handed over a lifelong pet owner.

And then the pet industry thanks rescue with a charity round-up at checkout. A percentage of sales. A fundraising drive.

Those things help. But they also reveal something.

Rescue is treated as a charity sitting beside the ecosystem — when it's actually helping create it.

The organisation that made a lifelong pet owner possible is usually operating with no budget, no staff, and no infrastructure. Volunteers coordinating fosters over text. Adoption records in spreadsheets. Post-adoption support that ends the moment the dog leaves the shelter.

LeashAgain is built on a simple belief: rescue belongs inside the pet ecosystem, not beside it.

Shelter partnerships aren't charity for us. They're distribution. They're how we reach families at the exact moment they need support most — day one after adoption.

The pet industry benefits from rescue every day. It's time to invest in what happens after the adoption.

I'm back in Rome.

A month in New York City. Here's what it actually taught me.

I went there thinking fundraising was about having the right deck and the right pitch. Clean numbers, sharp narrative, confident delivery.

It matters. But it's not the thing.

The thing is relationships. Every meaningful conversation I had in New York came through someone who knew someone who believed in what we were building enough to make a call. The cold outreach mostly went nowhere. The warm introductions opened every real door.

I also learned that rejection is information. The best rejection I got was several pages of detailed, honest feedback. It told me exactly what we need to fix and in what order. I've already started.

The hardest part of the month wasn't the rejections. It was the silence. Investors who took two meetings, asked for the deck, requested follow-ups, and then disappeared. That silence costs founders more than a clear no ever would.

I came back tired. Really tired. A month of living out of a bag, back-to-back meetings, time zone confusion, and the specific loneliness of pitching something you care about to rooms that are still deciding if they care.

But also: I came back knowing more about LeashAgain than I did when I left. What it is. What it isn't yet. What investors need to see before they can say yes.

That's worth the month.

Now we fix the things. Then we go back.

I've been meaning to write this for a while.

A few weeks ago, Alyssa Cary, MS, LVT officially joined LeashAgain as an advisor.

She came in quietly, in the way that the best advisors do — not with a big announcement but with real work. She's been helping us curate evidence-based resources for families inside the app, and shaping our criteria for vetting trainers in the marketplace. Her input on what good rescue-experienced training actually looks like has been exactly what we needed.

Alyssa is a licensed veterinary technician with a master's degree and a career built around one thing: making animal behavior education accessible. Not just to professionals — to the pet parents and families who need it most. She works with Fear Free, which means she brings a trauma-informed, low-stress philosophy to everything she touches.
