When a dog stops living, even before dying

I was presented with a case of immune-mediated hemolytic anemia in an adult female dog.

This is a condition in which the immune system destroys its own red blood cells, causing sometimes severe anemia. The blood can no longer carry oxygen effectively, and the body enters a state of progressive weakness. It is a complex disease, often difficult to stabilize.

After months of treatment, this was the situation:

she was not eating
she would get up only to eliminate
she no longer sought contact
she had lost all initiative

She was not just ill.
She had stopped responding.

The owner did not ask me for a miracle.
She asked whether it was possible to truly improve her quality of life.

In the following weeks, small but meaningful changes began to appear — the kind that matter in clinical practice:

her appetite returned
she started moving again
she resumed social interaction
blood tests showed progressive stabilization

Today, that dog lives a normal life.

This is not a story “against” something or someone.
It is a story that reminds us not to stop when one path is no longer working.

Because sometimes the question is not only:
“How do I treat this disease?”

but also:
“How do I help this animal start living again?”

**Getting ahead of the times is not always an advantage**
Understanding earlier does not mean being heard earlier.

In 2006, at the FIAMO Congress, I presented a paper on equine stereotypies that arose from a simple and uncomfortable question:
are we really talking about animal welfare, or merely about functional management?

The starting point was ethological. The horse is a social, nomadic, exploratory species, shaped for movement, continuous grazing, and relationship.
Stabling, early isolation, coercive training practices, and intermittent athletic use represent a departure from the species archetype, with psychological consequences that precede the physical ones.

Stereotypies (crib-biting, aerophagia, weaving, head shaking, lignophagia, aggression, work-related or transport-related anxiety) are not “vices,” but failed adaptive strategies to chronic, non-processable stress.

In that work, I argued that:

* many apparently unrelated clinical conditions (colic, lameness, ulcers, dermatitis) share a psycho-relational root
* veterinary medicine tends to medicalize what is instead a problem of relationship, environment, and meaning
* care cannot disregard the animal’s biopathography: its emotional, management, and relational history

Classical homeopathy, when grounded in solid ethological knowledge, allows the integration of symptom, behavior, and context—but only if accompanied by a revision of management practices and a genuine behavioral rehabilitation plan.

Looking back at that work today confirms one thing: nearly twenty years later, when we speak about equine welfare, not even the minimum box dimensions have changed.

During the translation of the *Materia Medica* by **William Cullen**, **Samuel Hahnemann** comes to a point he finds unconvincing: the claim that Cinchona is an antipyretic, stated without any real experimental evidence.

He therefore decides to verify it for himself. He takes the substance in substantial doses and carefully observes the effects. The symptoms he records — fever, chills, headache, muscular pain, nausea, exhaustion — closely resemble those of malarial fever, against which Cinchona was commonly prescribed.

From this observation arises a simple yet unsettling insight:
a substance capable of producing certain symptoms in a healthy person may, in a sick person, cure those very same symptoms.

This is not yet homeopathy. It is a hypothesis — fragile, but already powerful.
One decisive question remains open: *how* can a substance heal without causing harm?

The answer will come later. And it will require time, method, and a quiet revolution in medical thinking.

**From a personal crisis, a new way of healing is born**

When we speak of Homeopathy today, we often forget that it began with the profound crisis of an eighteenth-century physician: **Samuel Hahnemann**, born in Meissen in 1755.

He was a well-trained, cultured, and respected clinician. Yet one realization unsettled him:
the treatments of his time did not truly heal.

Bloodletting, toxic substances, repeated purges—rather than curing, they weakened patients.
Hahnemann accepted no compromises. The fracture between what he observed at the bedside and what he considered ethically acceptable became unbearable.

He took a radical step: he abandoned the medical profession.
A physician renouncing medicine was almost unthinkable in the 1700s.

With a large family to support, he earned a living by translating scientific texts in seven languages.
Solitary, demanding work—apparently far removed from his vocation.

And yet, precisely there, between the lines of the books he translated, the inquiry began that would lead him to formulate a new way of understanding healing.
An unexpected path, born from crisis and destined to endure across centuries.

New Swedish research on the difference between shod horse hooves and barefoot hooves has finally concluded: Barefoot hooves can move 50% more than hooves that are shod with traditional horseshoes. That, and other findings from the study, helps to explain why horses can improve their performance by g...

50 kg German Shepherd with malassezia otitis, under treatment for a long time without appreciable results. He arrives on a visit with low ears, black tar earwax, itching at night that makes him cry and very agitated and anxious. He is sensitive to cold and humidity. After a week of treatment WITH HOMEOPATHY ONLY, the ears are straight again, no longer crying at night, it is calmer and more cuddly, the ear wax first dries up then the secretion disappears. I don't think it's a placebo effect result !!!

HOMEOPATHY IN INTOXICATIONS

POINSETTIA EUPHORBIA pulcherrima A TOXIC POTENTIAL FOR OUR DOGS, CATS AND RABBITS
This particular plant that comes out during the Christmas period, comes from far Mexico where it grows spontaneously reaching up to 4 meters in height.
Cause its red color, which denotes the Christmas period, is sold everywhere in Italy, and is a welcome gift during the exchange of greetings for happy holidays.
It can be toxic to animals that maybe, being alone at home all day, get bored and play, chewing or ingesting either the petals or the leaves.
In fact, in the plant flows a milky sap that contains substances with toxic action (alkaloids and triterpenes).
SYMPTOMS
The symptoms of intoxication concern the ocular mucous membranes and the mouth, those that come into contact with the lymph. It has conjunctivitis with lacrimation and swelling of the eye, stomatitis (inflammation of the mouth) with the appearance of blisters on the tongue, swelling and burning and if ingested also diarrhea and vomiting.
In general, the resolution of the disease is benign, but symptomatic therapy must be performed. In these acute cases, homeopathy is distinguished by its immediate and decisive effect on the disease, avoiding the use of steroidal and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
