Every great horse trek begins with a great horse… So we breed them🐴❤️

At Horse Riding in Sicily | Trekking & Tours we breed and train the horses that carry our guests through the beautiful landscapes of Sicily ourselves - with a lot of love and passion. Our breeding history dates back many years: It was Francescos father who bought the first Franche Montagne horses about 30 years ago for the family farm, Azienda Agricola Traina. For many years, Franches Montagnes and Connemaras have then been the foundation of our herd and we love them for their calm character, endurance, and reliability for riders with different levels.

Our dream has alway been to combine these qualities with the Siciliano Orientale, Sicily’s native horse breed with elegant Arabic roots to receive intelligent, sporty horses with a lot of stamina and great rideability. This dream is now becoming reality: The first young horses from this cross have now started their training, and with a little more time and experience, they will hopefully join our the guides on their first day- and multi day treks next season🐴⛰️

Every horse here grows up in our herd and learns through patience, trust, and the principles of Natural Horsemanship. Our goal is to raise horses that are not only safe and dependable but also enjoy working with people and are true partners.

We are incredibly proud of this new generation and can’t wait to share the trail with them🤍

The Rotta Sicana - Our Signature Horse Trek from the Mountains to the Sea ⛰️🐎🌊

During seven unforgettable days in the saddle, you’ll cross some of Sicily’s most diverse and breathtaking landscapes. Starting in the rural heart of the island, the Sicani Mountains, the journey takes you all the way to the Mediterranean Sea.

Along the way, you’ll ride through rocky mountain trails, fertile farmland, cross rivers and shady native forests. As you get closer to the coast, the landscape slowly changes - from mountains to golden rolling hills, riding along and even in a river for a few kilometres, followed by pine and eucalyptus forests, citrus and olive groves… until finally, the sea appears in front of you🌅

Each evening, you’ll stay in carefully selected local agriturismi, enjoy traditional Sicilian cuisine and a well-deserved night’s sleep. On our final evening, we celebrate the adventure together with a final dinner at one of our favourite seaside restaurants, famous for its delicious fresh fish and seafood🐟

In 2027, we’re offering the Rotta Sicana twice: once in May and once in September. The May departure is already fully booked, but for 20 - 26 September 2027 we still have a few saddles available - they may not last long though!

The place we call home: Azienda Agricola Traina 🐎
The Traina Farm has been in our family since the late 1800s. It’s tucked away in the Sicani Mountains, between Prizzi and Palazzo Adriano, surrounded by nature and silence.

For generations, life here has been about horses, animals, olive trees and the land. Some things have changed over the years, but many haven’t. We still produce our own organic olive oil, grow vegetables for ourselves and raise the horses that accompany you on our treks.

This farm is where Sikani Horse Trek started. It’s where our horses grow up, where we spend our days and where we welcome guests from all over the world.
We like keeping things simple. Small groups, shared meals, evenings by the fireplace or outside under the trees, good conversations and the feeling of being at home instead of staying at a hotel.

If you come here, you’re not just visiting a farm. For a few days, you become part of our everyday life.

Our Riding & Culture Retreat is an invitation to experience the real Sicily with all your senses. Based at the beautiful Azienda Agricola Traina, where our horses are born and trained, we spend a week immersed in nature, authentic Italian culture, and unforgettable moments in the saddle.

Impressions from the multi day rides we had so far this year🐎☀️⛰️🌾🌊

In April, we kicked off this season with our Riding and Culture Retreat, followed by a Via dei Mille Ride and the Rotta Sicana im late May. Last month we also welcomed multiple groups for the Riding and Yoga Retreats that has been offering with us for many years. Sicily is blessing us with beautiful weather and landscapes and, as always, we love hosting you all and enjoy the good company! We are super happy about the rides we already did with you this year 🫶🏼

In the second half of 2026 we still have some last saddles available on the Via Dei Mille (Sept 10-14) and the Riding and Culture Retreat (Nov 7-13) - message us if you’re interested in joining us for one of these rides!

SEPTEMBER 10-14, 2026: VIA DEI MILLE RIDE 🇮🇹 Limited saddles available for our next Via dei Mille ride through Sicily this September🐎

A 3-day journey across the wild heart of Sicily, where history, landscapes and authentic local culture come together in the saddle.

We ride through the untouched Sosio Valley, across rolling vineyards, olive groves and mountain trails, following ancient paths into the forests of Bosco della Ficuzza and onward to historic Corleone. Along the way, we pass abandoned railway lines, dramatic rock formations and the beautiful Real Casina di Caccia di Ficuzza, once a Bourbon royal hunting lodge.

These landscapes were also part of Giuseppe Garibaldi’s famous Expedition of the Thousand in 1860, when his troops crossed inland Sicily on their way toward Palermo - a decisive chapter in the unification of Italy. But Via dei Mille is more than a historical route. It’s long canters through open countryside, panoramic climbs, evenings filled with Sicilian food and shared stories, and a deep connection to the land and its people.

Meet Francesco, the owner and heart of Sikani Horse Trek 🐴🌄

Born in Palazzo Adriano, in the heart of the Sicani Mountains, Francesco grew up among the horses and animals of his family’s historic farm in the Sosio Valley. Those early years shaped his deep connection to nature, to the land, and to a way of life that is still authentic and rooted in tradition.
Although he later lived in Palermo and managed an equestrian center there for almost twenty years, teaching riding and trekking to adults and children, he never truly felt like a city person. The mountains were always home. In 2022 he made the decision to return fully to the family farm and dedicate himself completely to developing Sikani Horse Trek.

The project was born in the landscapes of the Monti Sicani, a regional park established in 2010 in what is considered the oldest area of Sicily, once inhabited by the ancient Sican people long before Greek colonization. Here, together with his team and the horses bred and selected at the Traina farm, Francesco creates experiences that connect guests with real Sicily. For him, horses have always been part of life, family and identity.

Being able to combine them with the culture, traditions and everyday life of his homeland is something he feels proud to share with every rider who joins the journey.

Meet Anna, trainer and guide at Sikani Horse Trek 🐎
Born in Gorzegno with Swiss Austrian roots, Anna grew up on her family’s farm surrounded by forests, animals and a deep connection to nature. From an early age, her dream was clear: to discover the world on horseback.

In October 2021, she set off from Piedmont with two horses and her dog, riding all the way south. In April 2022, she reached the Sicani Mountains and found not only a destination, but a new home. Here in the landscapes of the Monti Sicani, she began collaborating with the Traina farm and the Sikani Horse Trek project.

Today, Anna is responsible for the training of our trekking horses and guides our multi day rides. She works closely with the young foals, developing them with her own horsemanship approach, shaped and refined over years of hands on experience. Her training blends instinct, intuition and deep observation with studies of American, Native, German and French horsemanship methods.

She is also known for her calm and confident work with so called problem horses, helping them find balance, trust and clarity. For Anna, training is never about force, but about communication, partnership and mutual respect.

Out on the trails, you feel that connection. The horses are attentive, willing and grounded, reflecting the quiet dedication behind their preparation ✨
