🇺🇸 1. All domestic cats derive from a single ancestral source: the African wildcat (Felis lybica), domesticated in the Fertile Crescent; local wild populations from other regions did not contribute to the domestic cat gene pool (Driscoll et al., 2007; Nilson et al., 2022).
2. The arrival of the domestic cat in Europe occurred later than previously thought: ancient DNA evidence places it at approximately 2,000 years ago, rather than in the Neolithic period, with its dispersal originating from North Africa (De Martino et al., 2025).
3. Cat breeds are a relatively recent phenomenon: more than 85% originated after the mid-twentieth century and, unlike in dogs, pedigree cats descend from common random-bred cats rather than the reverse (Kurushima et al., 2013).
4. The Maine C**n descends from farm cats of North America, which in turn originated from European cats brought by settlers. Both an origin from native American wild felids and an Asian origin can therefore be ruled out (Nilson et al., 2022; Han et al., 2025).
5. The resemblance between the Maine C**n and the Norwegian Forest Cat reflects convergent evolution and shared Western ancestry, rather than direct descent: genetically, the two breeds form distinct clusters (Alhaddad et al., 2021; Gandolfi et al., 2018).
6. The breed bears evidence of two distinct founder effects: U.S. lines, as well as some European lines, share the polydactyly allele associated with the so-called “Hemingway” cats, whereas the Canadian line appears to reflect an independent origin (Hamelin et al., 2020). National populations remain genetically distinguishable: Japanese Maine C**ns exhibit, in addition to the expected American genetic background, an introgression of local ancestry that is absent from U.S. Maine C**ns (Matsumoto et al., 2021).
