Ogni anno, il borgo etrusco di Vetulonia celebra il suo Palio: quattro rioni si sfidano in una gara davvero speciale… in sella ai loro asini! 🫏🏆

Noi siamo saliti in sella insieme a 7 fantastici Globetrotters e siamo partiti alla volta di Vetulonia per dare il via a un weekend tanto atteso, fatto di tradizione, amicizia, cavalli e pura magia maremmana. 🌿🐎

Vetulonia è uno dei borghi etruschi più affascinanti della Maremma, arroccato sulle colline con panorami spettacolari sull’Arcipelago Toscano. 💙🌅

Un luogo dove il tempo sembra fermarsi… e dove le antiche tradizioni sono ancora vive. ✨

Every year, the ancient Etruscan town of Vetulonia celebrates its very own Palio: four neighbourhoods compete for the prize in a truly unique race… riding donkeys! 🫏🏆

We saddled up with 7 amazing Globetrotters and rode to Vetulonia to kick off a much-anticipated weekend filled with tradition, friendship, horses and pure Maremma magic. 🌿🐎

Vetulonia is one of the most beautiful and fascinating Etruscan towns in Maremma, perched high in the hills with spectacular views over the Tuscan Archipelago. 💙🌅

A place where time seems to slow down… and ancient traditions are still very much alive. ✨

🌕 THE STURGEON MOON — AND A NIGHT WE WON’T FORGET

Why is August’s Full Moon called the Sturgeon Moon?

The name comes from Native American traditions and the natural world. In late summer, freshwater sturgeon moved into shallower waters, making them easier to catch. Hence, the Sturgeon Moon. 🎣🌕

But last night, our sturgeon were nowhere to be seen…

Instead, we gathered at the Clubhouse at 6pm and set off on horseback through the rolling hills of the Maremma, galloping beneath the golden evening light and watching another spectacular sunset.

Then came an authentic Maremma-style dinner beneath a sky full of stars.

And just as the moon began to sink, we saddled up again for the ride back to Gio Ranch.

This is the magical part.

No music. No noise. No distractions.

Just you, your horse and the wild Maremma around you. The sound of hooves, the whispers of the trees and that beautiful feeling of becoming completely in tune with your horse. 🐎✨

And then… the eclipse began. 🌕

As the Earth moved between the sun and moon, its shadow slowly covered the moon. The darkest part of that shadow is called the umbra.

Back at the Clubhouse, a final nightcap awaited us before we surrendered to a well-deserved sleep.

Some nights are beautiful.

Some nights feel a little bit… magical. 🌕🐎✨

Exactly 16 years ago today, we met. ❤️

There were no dating apps, no Instagram, no algorithms deciding whether we were a good match… just our dear friend Dianna van Berkom, who apparently thought we should give each other a try. We’re still not sure what she was thinking — but we’re very grateful she did. 😂

Our first date involved a plate of very definitely NOT al dente ravioli, cooked by G in Amsterdam. P persevered. That probably should have been the first warning sign. 😂

From Amsterdam to London, a little bit of Rome and eventually Tuscany, our life together has been anything but predictable.

Over the past 16 years, we’ve gone from one completely crazy project to another, with our friends regularly watching from the sidelines in a mixture of love, disbelief and mild panic.

And somehow, along the way, our family grew.

It now includes an extraordinary collection of wonderful friends, 5 beautiful dogs, 2 amazing cats, 15 strong horses, 1 very cute mini donkey, 1,000 olive trees, countless magnificent trees… and, without question, the crown jewel: is the beautiful granddaughter. ❤️

We’re both rather headstrong — which is a polite way of saying that neither of us is particularly good at being told what to do. We’ve challenged each other, driven each other slightly crazy, travelled the world, built businesses, bought things we probably shouldn’t have, survived things we definitely didn’t plan for… and had an enormous amount of fun along the way.

Sixteen years later, we’re older, hopefully a little wiser, still curious, still stubborn, still laughing — and still choosing each other.

So here’s to 16 years of love, adventures, madness, beautiful memories and questionable decisions.

And to whatever comes next…

Time flies when you’re having fun… and apparently when you’re growing up at Gio Toscana. 😂

Andrea, Bianca & Lilian — three years apart, same spot, same smiles… considerably more grown-up kids and a slightly more distinguished Brindle. 🐾

Our mighty Irish Wolfhound has changed too — a little greyer, a little wiser, and possibly even more convinced that Gio Toscana is his estate. 👑

For years, Brindle has been our unofficial Head of Hospitality, personally welcoming and greeting the many families who come to stay at our little corner of Maremma.

The children grow.
The dog ages.
The olive trees keep growing.
And Brindle still thinks he runs the place. ❤️

My beautiful cowgirls out there! 🤠🐎
Yes… there IS a badass guy out there who can ride like there’s no tomorrow! 🔥

Couple goals, Maremma style: she bought a dirt bike 🏍️… and he learned how to ride a horse 🐎 ! 😂❤️

Watching these two gallop together through the golden sunset of Maremma, surrounded by the beautiful countryside of Podere Follona, is pure magic. ✨🌅🐎

We feel incredibly privileged to spend time with them, share these trails, and witness the joy they bring to every ride. 🤎

Some moments are difficult to put into words.

On our trails, the horses have a way of taking us to places that feel deeper than just beautiful. Places where the landscape, the horse and the human seem to slow down together.

Here, with Farfalla beneath this ancient cuercia oak, it felt as though the three of us were having a silent conversation.

No words. No need for them.

Just a quiet exchange between human, horse and this old tree that has stood here for who knows how many years, watching over the rolling hills of Maremma.

These are the moments we ride for. And perhaps the magic of riding here is not only in where the trail takes you, but in what you feel when you arrive.
