THE STORY BEHIND PEDRO – EPISODE 10

PEDRO System, finally in action

From an idea to the operating room.

After years of research, design, simulations, mechanical testing and ex vivo validation, PEDRO System was finally ready for its first patients.

This important step was made possible through collaboration with veterinary surgeons who believed in the project and chose to introduce PEDRO System into their clinical practice.

Their experience in the operating room, together with their feedback and suggestions, helped us make the final refinements to the system, its instruments and the surgical workflow.

Since then, dozens of procedures have been performed using PEDRO System, with very encouraging clinical results.

What began in 2020 as an engineering challenge had become a real surgical solution, designed to support veterinary surgeons and help improve the lives of their patients.

But reaching the operating room was never the end of the journey.

Every new case, every surgeon and every clinical experience gives us an opportunity to continue learning and improving.

The development journey ends here.
The PEDRO journey has only just begun.

Would you implant a medical device without knowing where it comes from?

Today, implants, screws, plates and other devices for veterinary orthopedic and spinal surgery are increasingly available through international online sales platforms, sometimes offered by suppliers with unclear quality standards, limited traceability and no identifiable responsible economic operator.

But when a device is going to be implanted in an animal's body, price and convenience should never be the only criteria.

Where does it come from?
Which materials were used?
Is it traceable?
What quality controls were performed?
And, if something goes wrong, who is responsible?

Buying online is not the problem. Buying without verified guarantees is.

At Overvet, we believe in controlled manufacturing processes, traceable medical-grade materials, documented quality standards and a reliable professional distribution network.

This is the approach behind PEDRO System, manufactured within an ISO 13485-certified quality management system and available through trusted distribution channels.

Because in veterinary surgery, what matters is not where you click “buy”, but what stands behind the product you choose.

THE STORY BEHIND PEDRO – EPISODE 9

The final step before clinical use

After successfully passing the mechanical tests at Politecnico di Milano, PEDRO System was ready for one final challenge before moving to clinical use: ex vivo testing.

Each of the three system sizes needed to be evaluated on canine anatomical specimens. These tests were carried out at different times, allowing us to assess every configuration under realistic surgical conditions.

But this phase wasn't only about testing the implants.

For the first time, we could evaluate the complete surgical experience: the instruments, the implantation procedure, component handling and the different steps required by the surgeon.

Working closely with veterinary surgeons, we identified opportunities to refine the instrumentation and optimize the surgical workflow, with two clear objectives: reliability and ease of use.

After completing the ex vivo tests across the entire PEDRO range, the final adjustments were made.

Months of research, engineering, simulations and testing had led us here.

PEDRO System was finally ready for its first patients.

The next chapter would take us into the operating room.

THE STORY BEHIND PEDRO – EPISODE 8

The first mechanical tests

After almost 24 months of development, PEDRO System was ready to face one of its most important challenges: fatigue testing.

The simulations had given us confidence, but now the system had to prove its mechanical performance under real laboratory conditions.

At the Politecnico di Milano, the components underwent repeated loading and unloading cycles designed to evaluate their behavior under demanding mechanical stress.

With no specific veterinary testing standard available for this application, the testing methodology was based on internationally recognized approaches used for human spinal fixation systems, including ASTM F1717 and ISO 12189, adapted to the canine model.

The aim was clear: to verify whether the system could withstand the forces expected during use and confirm what our simulations had predicted.

After two days of testing, the results arrived.

PEDRO System had successfully passed its first mechanical tests.

Another major milestone had been reached.

The next challenge?
Moving from the laboratory to the first cadaver tests.

Veterinary care: new support for pet owners in Lombardy

Access to veterinary care is an increasingly important part of protecting the health and wellbeing of companion animals.

Following the implementation of the National Fund for companion animals, Lombardy is defining the procedures for allocating resources to support veterinary expenses incurred by eligible pet owners.

The measure is intended for people aged 65 or over with an ISEE below €16,215 and covers eligible expenses incurred from 2024, including veterinary visits, diagnostic tests, medicines and surgical procedures.

An important initiative, particularly because it recognizes that access to veterinary care — including surgery — can have a significant impact on the quality of life of our animals.

At Overvet, we work every day to contribute to this same goal from another perspective: developing innovative solutions and supporting veterinary surgeons with technologies designed to improve the treatment of their patients.

Making quality veterinary care increasingly accessible and advanced means investing in their health and in their future.

THE STORY BEHIND PEDRO – EPISODE 7

Testing before testing: static simulations

After successfully completing the dimensional checks, PEDRO System was ready for the next challenge: functional testing.

But before moving into the laboratory, we needed to understand how each component would behave under mechanical stress.

Using dedicated simulation software integrated with our CAD systems, our engineers recreated the forces that screws and rods could experience, identifying critical areas and evaluating their mechanical response.

Both 2.7 mm and 3.5 mm screws, together with the rods, were subjected to static simulations. The results were encouraging and confirmed that the design was ready to move forward.

These virtual tests represented an essential step: they allowed us to evaluate the design and make potential adjustments before producing components for laboratory testing.

With the simulations successfully completed, it was finally time to involve one of our most important technological partners: Politecnico di Milano

The virtual phase was over.
Now PEDRO System had to face the real test.

THE STORY BEHIND PEDRO – EPISODE 6

The first dimensional tests

After completing the design, it was finally time to see whether our calculations worked in practice.

We decided to manufacture the largest PEDRO System first, followed by the smallest one. These two extreme configurations would later allow us to evaluate the system under different mechanical conditions.

After weeks of manufacturing, the first components were ready.

We assembled the newly created PEDRO System on a canine spinal model to verify the dimensions defined during the initial studies.

The first results were promising: screw length and diameter, positioning and interaction between the different components all worked as we had envisioned.

The next step was to manufacture the smallest system, where reduced dimensions could represent a greater mechanical challenge.

A few weeks later, both configurations were ready.

Now visual and dimensional checks were no longer enough.

It was time to put PEDRO to the test.

The next destination: Politecnico di Milano, for mechanical testing.

Dogs and cats walking again, playing and returning to the activities they love after spinal surgery.

Behind every one of these stories there is the work of veterinary surgeons and specialists, the trust of families and a shared goal: helping our four-legged friends regain their mobility and quality of life.

PEDRO System was created to support veterinary professionals with an advanced solution for spinal stabilization — but its true value can be seen in the patients themselves.

A special thank you to all the veterinarians, specialists and families who have shared these moments with us.

THE STORY BEHIND PEDRO – EPISODE 5

From digital design to reality

After hours of engineering, simulations and refinements, the first complete design of PEDRO System was finally ready.

Every component of the spinal fixation system now existed digitally: from polyaxial pedicle screws and rods to locking elements and interbody cages, the latter designed to be manufactured using 3D printing technology.

The next step was clear: turn the digital project into a real, tangible system.

Our engineers sent the designs into production. Additive-manufactured components were entrusted to specialized external partners, while the other components were produced by Leghe Leggere Lavorate, drawing on more than 25 years of experience in manufacturing implantable medical devices for both human and veterinary applications.

Close collaboration between our design engineers and production specialists proved essential. Manufacturing expertise helped identify potential production challenges, refine component geometries and introduce improvements to both performance and production efficiency.

Because a great design doesn't end on a computer screen.

It becomes real when engineering and manufacturing work together.

The first PEDRO System was finally taking physical shape.
