SEA LIFE TRUST Beluga Whale Sanctuary At the SEA LIFE TRUST Beluga Whale Sanctuary, we are pioneering new ways to care for beluga whales. Support conservation!

Discover our Visitor Centre, Puffin Rescue Centre, and aquarium showcasing Iceland's unique marine life. The Sanctuary is operated by the SEA LIFE Trust, a charity registered in England and Wales and CAF America approved. All money raised from ticket sales helps us to provide the best possible care for Little White and Little Grey, as well as the other animals we look after here at the Sanctuary. Our Visitor Centre is open daily in summer season from April to October and on select dates in winter. The Centre includes Iceland´s only Puffin Rescue Centre and a native species aquarium. Puffin Rescue Centre – See our resident puffins, learn all about these amazing birds that inhabit the Vestmannaeyjar islands and hear about how we, along with the islanders, are helping to protect them. Our native species aquarium showcases some of the beautiful animals that share the belugas’ new home. Klettsvik Bay

Klettsvik Bay is across the harbour from our Visitor Centre and will be the new home for our resident belugas. When the belugas are in bay we run carefully managed boat trips to visit them from Vestmannaeyjar Harbour which allows you to view the belugas home from a discreet distance.

April and Bryan were walking around Iceland at midnight when they spotted something they never expected to see in the middle of the street: a baby puffin. 🐧

They learned that young puffins can become disoriented by town lights when they leave their burrows, accidentally heading inland instead of toward the ocean.

The couple, who both had animal rescue experience, carefully picked him up and brought him to a local rescue center. But it was already closed for the night, so they kept the puffling safely contained overnight and returned the next morning, where he was weighed and cleared for release.

April and Bryan brought the little puffin, whom they named Orin, to the cliffs, where other puffins were flying all around them.

The couple watched Orin fly out and land near a group of other young puffins. April was so overwhelmed that she started crying.

After traveling seven hours to Iceland for a vacation, April and Bryan called this the highlight of their entire trip. ❤️

Veggur was brought to us three years ago today, after being found covered in oil and suffering an eye injury from flying into a building. Veggur won over the team with their energetic spirit and silly behaviours and has continued to thrive here at BWS, even finding love with one of our other residents, Glugga! Happy Rescue Day, Veggur!🥳

This week, we’d like to introduce Barbi! She joined our team as an Animal Care Specialist in June 2025….

Q: What’s your role at the sanctuary, and what does a typical day look like for you?

A:I’m a trainer and animal care specialist! My days usually vary between taking care of the belugas or the puffins but sometimes I also get the chance to help in the aquarium, go train in the bay or give some nice tours to guests who visits us! I mostly make sure that all the animals feel as best as possible, I prepare their food, clean their spaces, offer some fun enrichment and train them!

Q:What drew you to working at an animal sanctuary specifically?

A: I’m obsessed with nature and all types of animals since birth (as my mum can testify), having most of my experience related to ecology, mammals and birds. I’ve always been interested in rescue centres were I could help injured animals recover and go back home. Many years ago I found out about Little White and Little Grey story, about their journey back to the sea, and I knew I wanted to be part of it, I wanted to help them gain their freedom again. To this also adds our puffling hospital and rescue, perfect match! Working in the Beluga Sanctuary and Rescue means helping the animals have back the life they deserve and my heart is so full when I see them happy and home, something I helped to do.

Q:Which sanctuary resident has stolen your heart?

A: The easy answer would be White and Grey, I love the girls, but I have another little pirate that stole my heart from the beginning. During summer 2025 I received a little puffling found lost and injured. Since the first check and intake, I closely followed his journey. Sadly, because of his injuries, he couldn’t go back to the sea but he stayed with us as a resident puffin and ambassador. After his personality, he gained the name of Captain Jack Sparrow! Our little Jack, the bestest puffin in town. You have to come and meet him! He will steal your heart too (and some fish if he can)!

There's still time to come visit us this year! Stop by and see us between 11am and 3pm, every day. Happy Autumn!🍂

Our small but mighty little team of volunteers braved 12m/s winds and rain to participate in this years for SEA LIFE TRUST. We love our little island here in Vestmannaeyjar and we’re happy to help clean up some of the plastic and fishing debris that washed ashore!
