Crocodiles are living echoes of an ancient world—guardians of wetlands/marshes and rivers whose survival reflects the health of the ecosystems we all share. They are an ecosystem indicator species and thrive at the top of the food chain in their ecosystem
There are currently 27 recognized extant species of crocodilians worldwide, classified within the order Crocodylia.
These species are distributed among three families:
* Alligatoridae (Alligators and Caimans)
* Crocodylidae (True crocodilians like Marsh/Saltwater/ Nile crocodiles)
* Gavialidae (Gharials and False Gavials)
Fascinating Fun Facts!
1. The temperature of the nest determines the s*x of the hatchlings.
Unlike mammals, crocodilians do not have s*x chromosomes. Instead, incubation temperature during a critical stage of egg development determines whether hatchlings become male or female.
2. Mothers are surprisingly attentive parents.
Female crocodilians guard their nests fiercely and often help hatchlings emerge by gently carrying them in their mouths to the water. Many species continue protecting their young for weeks or even months.
3. Did you know that crocodiles can make between 15-20 kind of vocalisation sounds to communicate?!??
Different species emphasize different sounds.
They include Pre-hatching calls from inside the egg, Hatchling distress calls, Contact calls between mothers and young, Juvenile distress calls, Adult grunts, Growls, Hisses, Bellows, Roars, Jaw claps and snaps and head slaps on water (non-vocal sounds), Courtship infrasound and more!!!
Co existance: 🦋 Butterflies have occasionally been observed drinking tears from crocodiles and caimans. This behavior, known as lachryphagy, allows butterflies to obtain essential minerals such as sodium that are scarce in their usual diet.
Lets Celebrate their existence !!
Happy World Crocodile Day !! 🐊
