🐐 LISTERIOSIS IN GOATS — RECOGNIZE IT EARLY! 🦠

Listeriosis is a serious bacterial infection in goats caused mainly by Listeria monocytogenes. It can progress rapidly, especially in animals consuming poor-quality, spoiled or improperly fermented silage.

🚨 KEY SIGNS & SYMPTOMS

• 🌀 Circling / walking in one direction
• 🤕 Head tilt & loss of balance
• 👁️ Facial paralysis or drooping ear/lip
• 👅 Difficulty chewing, swallowing & drooling
• 🌡️ Fever, depression & weakness
• 🍽️ Loss of appetite
• 🐐 Staggering, recumbency & inability to stand
• 🤰 Abortions, stillbirths or weak newborns
• ⚠️ Severe cases → paralysis, coma & death

💉 LINE OF TREATMENT

Early treatment is critical.

🔹 Antibiotic therapy: Penicillin-class antibiotics are commonly considered first-line therapy, with treatment continued for an adequate duration based on clinical response and veterinary guidance.

🔹 Anti-inflammatory therapy: Appropriate NSAID therapy may help control fever, inflammation and discomfort.

🔹 Supportive care:
• IV/SC fluids where indicated
• B-complex/thiamine supplementation when appropriate
• Nutritional support
• Maintain hydration & body temperature
• Assisted feeding in animals with dysphagia — avoid aspiration

🔹 Management:
🚫 Remove spoiled/poor-quality silage or feed immediately.
🧼 Improve feed hygiene and sanitation.
🐐 Isolate affected animals and monitor the herd closely.

Neurological listeriosis can deteriorate within hours to days. Early recognition and aggressive treatment offer the best chance of recovery.

🐱👁️ Eosinophilic Keratitis in Cats
That white/pink film on your cat’s eye may NOT be a simple infection!
🔬 What is Eosinophilic Keratitis?
Feline eosinophilic keratitis (FEK) is a chronic immune-mediated inflammatory disease of the cornea, commonly seen in cats. It may affect one or both eyes and can become recurrent.
🚨 Common Signs
👁️ White, pink or yellowish raised plaques on the cornea
🔴 Redness & conjunctival inflammation
💧 Excessive tearing
😿 Squinting or ocular discomfort
🩸 Corneal blood vessels growing into the lesion
⚪ Corneal opacity
🐾 Pawing/rubbing at the eye
🧪 How is it diagnosed?
Diagnosis is based on clinical appearance + ophthalmic examination, with corneal/conjunctival cytology being particularly useful. Eosinophils and other inflammatory cells may be identified on cytology.
Differentials include: • Feline herpesvirus keratitis
• Corneal ulceration
• Sequestrum
• Fungal/bacterial keratitis
• Neoplasia
💊 Treatment
Treatment is case-dependent and may involve:
🔹 Topical corticosteroids when corneal ulceration has been ruled out
🔹 Topical immunomodulators such as cyclosporine or tacrolimus in selected cases
🔹 Antiviral therapy when FHV-1 is suspected
🔹 Treatment of secondary infection when indicated
🔹 Debridement or other procedures in refractory cases
⚠️ NEVER use steroid eye drops in a cat with an undiagnosed corneal ulcer. A fluorescein stain should be performed before corticosteroid therapy.

Tiny worms in your cat's eyes can cause serious discomfort and even vision loss if left untreated.
