What is Cherry Eye?

Cats have a "third eyelid" (nictitating membrane) in the inner corner of their eyes that provides extra protection and moisture. This eyelid contains a gland responsible for producing about 30–50% of the eye's tears. When the connective tissue holding this gland in place weakens, the gland "pops out," appearing as a fleshy, red or pink

Causes & Predispositions

The exact cause is often genetic, relating to weak connective tissues. It is most commonly seen in cats under 2 years old. While any cat can develop it, certain breeds are more predisposed:
Burmese (most common)
Persian
Siamese
Abyssinian
