The State of West Bengal with a variety of forest types is very rich in terms of Wildlife. North Bengal flood plains harbor wild animals like Tiger , Common Leopard , Clouded Leopard , Elephant , Rhino , Himalayan Black Bear , Sloth Bear , Gaur , Sambar , Barking Deer , Spotted Deer , Hog Deer , Wild Boar , Rhesus Monkey , Common Languor ,

different types of small Cats and Civets ,Crocodile , Gharail , Jungle Fowls and a large number of terrestrial and water Birds. Siliguri is second most populous city after Kolkata in West Bengal and is situated at the entrance of North Bengal. People travelling to Darjeeling hills, Sikkim, North East India, Bhutan and Eastern Nepal have to touch through Siliguri. It is well connected with all these along with Kolkata and New Delhi by Rail, Road and Air. North Bengal Wild Animals Park, Siliguri has established to showcase the faunal diversity of the North Bengal flood plains to the local people and visitors to the region. The Safari Park has been planned keeping in view the standard and norms formulated by the Central Zoo Authority for its development and maintenance. North Bengal Wild Animals Park, Siliguri is spread in an area of 297 hectares. The Park is developed in its natural habitat of Sal & its associated species .The Park shall be having 4 nos. Mixed Herbivore Safari (91 ha), Tiger Safari (20 ha). The visitors shall be taken to these safaris in specially designed vehicles. The lesser cats, fresh water crocodile, gharial and representatives birds of North Bengal shall be displayed in appropriately designed large enclosures. Hon’ble Chief Minister, West Bengal laid the foundation stone of the North Bengal Wild Animals Park, Siliguri on 17th July, 2014. Section of the Park with Mixed Herbivore Safari, Red Jungle Fowl enclosure and jungle Cat enclosure is ready for opening to the public. Hon’ble Chief Minister, West Bengal dedicated the North Bengal Wild Animals Park, Siliguri to the nation in January 2016. Total Area – 297 ha

North Bengal Wild Animals Park (NBWAP) celebrated World Bear Day on 23rd March 2026 in collaboration with the students of Siliguri College. The programme commenced with an opening session highlighting the significance of World Bear Day and the importance of bear conservation.
This was followed by a guided on-foot zoo tour by the Research & Education section, providing students with practical exposure and valuable insights into wildlife management and conservation practices.
A technical session by Zoobiologist, NBWAP was subsequently held at the Nature Interpretation Centre (NIC), focusing on bear species across the world, with special emphasis on the Asiatic black bear, including its distribution, habitat, and conservation status. The session was complemented by a video screening on the Asiatic black bear at NBWAP, enhancing the students’ understanding of captive management and species conservation.
Certificates were then distributed to the participating students by Assistant Director, Range Officer and Zoobiologist, NBWAP. The programme concluded with a formal vote of thanks, followed by refreshments for all participants. Overall, the event was successfully conducted under the guidance of the Director, NBWAP, creating awareness about bear conservation and fostering student engagement in wildlife education.

Republic Day Celebration at Bengal Safari

The 77th Republic Day of India was celebrated with great enthusiasm and patriotic spirit at Bengal Safari on 26th January. The programme commenced with the unfurling of the National Flag by the Director, North Bengal Wild Animals Park, followed by the singing of the National Anthem in the presence of officers, staff members, and employees of the park.

The occasion highlighted the importance of the Indian Constitution and the values of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity. Officers addressed the gathering, emphasizing the role of discipline, dedication, and responsibility in serving the nation and conserving wildlife.

The celebration reflected a sense of unity and national pride among all present. The event concluded with a pledge to uphold the ideals of the Constitution and to continue working sincerely towards wildlife conservation and environmental protection.

Celebration of 11th Foundation Day of North Bengal Wild Animals Park

The 11th Foundation Day of North Bengal Wild Animals Park (Bengal Safari) was celebrated with great enthusiasm and dignity on 21st January 2026.
The programme commenced at 11:00 AM with the reception of esteemed dignitaries, followed by the formal session beginning at 11:30 AM with a warm welcome and a briefing on the journey of Bengal Safari.
The occasion was graced by the presence of distinguished dignitaries:
Shri P. Kamalakanth, IFS, APCCF & Member Secretary, West Bengal Zoo Authority;
Shri C. Sudhakar, IPS, Commissioner of Police, Siliguri Police Commissionerate;
Shri Kumar Vimal, IFS, General Manager (North), WBFDC;
Shri Arun Kumar Mukhopadhyay, IFS, Director, Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park;
Smt. Uma Rani N, IFS, DFO, Monitoring North.
During the programme, Shri P. Kamalakanth, IFS, Member Secretary, WBZA, delivered a detailed address highlighting the journey of Bengal Safari, its steady growth, major milestones, and its role in wildlife conservation and eco-tourism. His address beautifully reflected the vision, progress, and future roadmap of the park.
A promotional video showcasing the evolution, conservation initiatives, and future aspirations of Bengal Safari was also screened for the audience.
One of the major highlights of the programme was the release of the book “Butterflies of Bengal Safari”, which documents the rich butterfly diversity of the park. The book reflects extensive field surveys, photography, and species identification carried out with dedication under the guidance of the Director, North Bengal Wild Animals Park.
The programme was further enriched by a cultural dance performance by the students of Ektiasal Tileswari Adhikari High School, who had also performed during the inaugural year of Bengal Safari, adding a nostalgic and meaningful touch to the celebration.

Children’s Day Celebration – 14 November 2025
North Bengal Wild Animals Park (Bengal Safari)

North Bengal Wild Animals Park sparkled with joy and excitement as we celebrated Children’s Day with the enthusiastic participation of students from Cosmos Global Pre-Primary School, Salugara Branch, and Techno India Group Public School, Siliguri. Their cheerful presence filled the park with warmth and laughter!

The day began with an exciting Safari Tour, where children explored the wonders of wildlife. Their wide-eyed curiosity and endless questions made the experience truly special.

A lively Cake-cutting Ceremony at NIC added a festive touch to the celebration.

The program was graced by the Director, North Bengal Wild Animals Park, whose encouraging words inspired the young learners to love and protect nature. The Assistant Director also supported the event, ensuring smooth coordination throughout the program.

✨ The highlight of the day was the students’ outstanding performances.
From expressive storytelling and creative poetry to energetic dances, melodious singing, and colourful face painting, the children displayed remarkable talent and confidence. Their performances lit up the event and won everyone’s hearts.

Each participant received a Certificate of Participation, appreciating their enthusiasm and creativity.

The celebration concluded with the distribution of gifts and refreshments, bringing big smiles to the little ones and making the day even more memorable.

The entire event beautifully reflected the true spirit of Children’s Day—joy, creativity, learning, and the magic of childhood.
