How to Take Care of Pet Animals During Hot Summer | Pets & Stray Animals

By Dr Amit Sarkar, Veterinarian

Hello everyone,
Summer can be very difficult for our pet animals as well as stray dogs and cats. Just like humans, animals can also suffer from dehydration, heat stress, and heat stroke.

Today, I will share some important and practical tips on how to take care of them during the hot summer months.

☀️ 1) Always Provide Fresh Drinking Water
The most important thing is clean, cool drinking water.
For pets, make sure their water bowls are always filled and kept in a shaded place.
For stray animals, you can place earthen bowls or steel bowls of water outside your home, shop, or clinic.
Please check and refill the water several times a day.
Even one small bowl of water can save a life.

🌳 2) Keep Them in a Cool and Shaded Area
Avoid keeping pets in direct sunlight.
They should stay in a well-ventilated, cool room or shaded veranda.
For stray animals, allow them to rest under trees, parked shade areas, or shaded corners.
Never drive away an animal that is resting in the shade during extreme heat.

🚶 3) Avoid Afternoon Walks
Do not take dogs out for walks during the hottest part of the day, especially between 11 AM and 4 PM.
The road and pavement become extremely hot and can burn their paw pads.
Take them for walks early in the morning or late in the evening.

🍉 4) Give Light and Fresh Food
During summer, animals often eat less.
Provide fresh, light meals and never leave food outside for too long as it spoils quickly in heat.
You may give water-rich foods as advised for the pet’s diet.

🐶 5) Watch for Signs of Heat Stroke
This is very important.
Symptoms include:
Excessive panting
Drooling
Weakness
Vomiting
Red tongue and gums
Collapse or unconsciousness
If you notice these signs, immediately move the animal to a cool place, offer water, and contact a veterinarian urgently.
Heat stroke is an emergency.

✂️ 6) Grooming and Coat Care
Regular brushing helps remove excess fur and improves air circulation through the coat.
However, do not shave the coat completely unless medically advised, because fur also protects them from direct heat.

❤️ 7) Care for Stray Animals
Stray animals need our compassion the most during summer.
A bowl of water, a shaded resting spot, and a little food can make a huge difference.
Kindness toward stray animals is also a part of responsible community care.

🎯 Closing Line
Let us all work together to keep our pets and stray animals safe this summer.
A little care can prevent serious illness and save lives.

Thank you.

🐾 MICROCHIPPING IN PET ANIMALS
A Small Chip for a Lifetime of Safety

✅ What is a microchip?
A microchip is a tiny electronic identification chip, about the size of a grain of rice.
It is safely inserted under the skin, usually between the shoulder blades.
Each chip carries a unique identification number.
This number can be read using a special scanner.

✅ Benefits of microchipping
Permanent identification of your pet throughout life
Helps in quick reunion if the pet is lost or stolen
Useful during travel and legal documentation
Prevents confusion in pets that look similar
Safe, quick, and minimally painful procedure
Works for dogs, cats, and other pet animals

✅ Important point to know
Microchip does NOT track your pet’s real-time location
It is not a GPS device
It cannot show live movement on mobile phone or map
It only helps identify the pet when scanned by a veterinarian, shelter, or rescue worker

✅ How does it help when a pet is lost?
If someone finds your pet, they can take it to a vet clinic
The microchip is scanned
The unique ID number is matched with the owner’s contact details
This greatly increases the chance of getting your pet back safely

✅ Safety of the procedure
The procedure is very safe and quick
Similar to giving an injection
Usually does not require surgery
Causes only minimal discomfort
Can be done during routine health check-up or vaccination visit

🐾 PET PARENTS — PLEASE DON’T GOOGLE YOUR PATIENTS 🐾

• Google cannot examine your pet physically
• One symptom can have many different causes
• Google interpret symptoms as per you have observed the symptoms, may be veterinarian can find other problems and correlate it
• Online information is often confusing or misleading
• Wrong interpretation can delay proper treatment
• Self-medication can be dangerous and life-threatening
• Every pet needs individual diagnosis and care
• Google doesn’t have stethoscope or other tools to examine patients
• Only a veterinarian can provide accurate treatment

✅ What you should do:
• Observe your pet carefully
• Note all symptoms and changes
• Animals are good at hiding symptoms, so try to find then early
• Consult your veterinarian early
• Follow proper medical advice

❤️ Your love matters, but expert care matters more.
Trust your veterinarian, not the internet.

Not all the patients reach final & complete recovery.

Recovery of a pet patient depends on several key factors, which a pet parent needs to understand:

1. Age and overall health – Younger and otherwise healthy pets recover faster than older or CHRONICALLY ill animals.

2. Early diagnosis – Timely identification of the disease greatly improves the chances of recovery. Animals can’t speak or express it’s pain, so most of the time pet parents delay to identify the symptoms.

3. Severity and type of illness – Mild conditions heal quickly, while serious infections or surgical cases take longer and need intensive care.

4. Timely and appropriate treatment – Correct treatment started at the right time is crucial for successful recovery. Often diagnostic tests are done lately reducing the chances of recovery.

5. Medication compliance – Giving medicines properly (appropriate dose) and completing the FULL COURSE prevents relapse and speeds up healing.

6. Nutrition and hydration – A balanced diet or appropriate diet and adequate fluids support immunity and tissue repair.

7. Post-treatment care – Proper rest, hygiene, a stress-free environment and love of the pet parents help in faster recovery.

8. Regular follow-up and monitoring – Continuous check-ups (including blood checks) ensure progress and allow early detection of complications.

9. Preventive measures like deworming, vaccination and tick-flea control reduces chance of suffering and helps in faster recovery.

10. MOST IMPORTANTLY, Pet parent awareness and care – Following veterinary advice word by word and observing the pet closely play a vital role in recovery. Veterinary advice will be given by a Veterinarian in a similar way to all the patients. It the PET PARENTS WHO MAKE THE DIFFERENCE in healing their children by following the advice .

Trust your Veterinarian and follow his/her advice.

Pyometra in Dogs

Pyometra is a serious and life-threatening infection of the uterus commonly seen in unspayed female dogs, especially middle-aged to older bi***es. It usually occurs 1–2 months after the estrus (heat) cycle due to the influence of progesterone hormone.

Repeated heat cycles cause thickening of the uterine lining (cystic endometrial hyperplasia), creating a favorable environment for bacterial growth, most commonly E. coli. As a result, the uterus fills with pus and toxic fluid.

Pyometra may be of two types:

Open pyometra – cervix remains open and pus or blood-stained discharge is seen from the v***a
Closed pyometra – cervix remains closed, no visible discharge, making it more dangerous due to risk of uterine rupture and septicemia

Clinical signs:
Foul-smelling vaginal discharge (in open pyometra)
Fever
Lethargy and weakness
Loss of appetite
Vomiting
Increased thirst and urination
Abdominal distension
Dehydration

Diagnosis:
Diagnosis is based on:
History of recent heat cycle
Clinical signs
Abdominal palpation
Ultrasonography / X-ray
Hematology and biochemical tests

Treatment:
Pyometra is a medical emergency. The treatment of choice is ovariohysterectomy (spaying) along with:
IV fluids
Broad-spectrum antibiotics
Supportive therapy

Prevention:
The best prevention is timely spaying of female dogs that are not intended for breeding.
