How to Take Care of Pet Animals During Hot Summer | Pets & Stray Animals
By Dr Amit Sarkar, Veterinarian
Hello everyone,
Summer can be very difficult for our pet animals as well as stray dogs and cats. Just like humans, animals can also suffer from dehydration, heat stress, and heat stroke.
Today, I will share some important and practical tips on how to take care of them during the hot summer months.
☀️ 1) Always Provide Fresh Drinking Water
The most important thing is clean, cool drinking water.
For pets, make sure their water bowls are always filled and kept in a shaded place.
For stray animals, you can place earthen bowls or steel bowls of water outside your home, shop, or clinic.
Please check and refill the water several times a day.
Even one small bowl of water can save a life.
🌳 2) Keep Them in a Cool and Shaded Area
Avoid keeping pets in direct sunlight.
They should stay in a well-ventilated, cool room or shaded veranda.
For stray animals, allow them to rest under trees, parked shade areas, or shaded corners.
Never drive away an animal that is resting in the shade during extreme heat.
🚶 3) Avoid Afternoon Walks
Do not take dogs out for walks during the hottest part of the day, especially between 11 AM and 4 PM.
The road and pavement become extremely hot and can burn their paw pads.
Take them for walks early in the morning or late in the evening.
🍉 4) Give Light and Fresh Food
During summer, animals often eat less.
Provide fresh, light meals and never leave food outside for too long as it spoils quickly in heat.
You may give water-rich foods as advised for the pet’s diet.
🐶 5) Watch for Signs of Heat Stroke
This is very important.
Symptoms include:
Excessive panting
Drooling
Weakness
Vomiting
Red tongue and gums
Collapse or unconsciousness
If you notice these signs, immediately move the animal to a cool place, offer water, and contact a veterinarian urgently.
Heat stroke is an emergency.
✂️ 6) Grooming and Coat Care
Regular brushing helps remove excess fur and improves air circulation through the coat.
However, do not shave the coat completely unless medically advised, because fur also protects them from direct heat.
❤️ 7) Care for Stray Animals
Stray animals need our compassion the most during summer.
A bowl of water, a shaded resting spot, and a little food can make a huge difference.
Kindness toward stray animals is also a part of responsible community care.
🎯 Closing Line
Let us all work together to keep our pets and stray animals safe this summer.
A little care can prevent serious illness and save lives.
Thank you.
