Margit Maxwell try using a combination of LEAVE IT command and redirection. Use high value treat to redirect dog's attention from the cat to the treat and to you. Have the dog practice being in the presence of the cats for longer and longer periods of time while redirecting his attention to you. Remember too, that the new dog is still young, silly, and full of rambunctious energy. Lots of exercise will help vent some of the energy.
