A court ruling in Brazil is changing how pets are viewed under the law.

Brazil’s courts have ruled that dogs and cats are legally recognized as sentient beings, not property. The decision strengthens penalties for mistreatment and cruelty, acknowledging that companion animals can feel pain and suffering.
Legal experts say the shift could influence future animal welfare cases and reflects a broader move toward stronger protections for pets in Brazil.

We humans cannot understand one another's spoken language, while animals can communicate honestly by body-language even between vastly different species.

Sound advice:

"Discipline in the sense of control, not discipline in the sense of punishment, is what is needed. . . .
Proper understanding of training techniques and their diligent application are not only essential from a social perspective, but also good for dog-owner relationship."

"Some people treat their dogs as if they are as smart as humans; others, as if they were particularly dim-witted children. They are neither! DOGS ARE AS INTELLIGENT AS DOGS NEED TO BE - which means that their intelligence is not like ours. . .
As soon as we start treating dogs as little people, rather than the dogs they are, our actions become incomprehensible or misleading. Indeed, our actions are of such importance to dogs that they cannot but become confused and distressed when unable to understand us. . . . The point here is not that dogs are stupid, but rather that their brand of intelligence differs from the primate model."

Yes, we have always said:
Love your dog as one of the family, but UNDERSTAND it as a dog.

Lack of understanding is an insidious form of cruelty to your dog that is seldom acknowledged. . .or remedied.

The importance of puppy socialisation begins BEFORE you bring your puppy home.

The write-up is from 'In Defence of Dogs' by John Bradshaw. Read the whole book, if you can.

Make sure that you procure your puppy from an ethical breeder who has raised the litter with the right kind of human interaction. Avoid dealers and pet shops.

DOGS ARE NOT GOLDFISH

Besides the pedigree what also counts is how the puppy's temperament has been moulded during the crucial weeks BEFORE it reaches you.

THE IMPORTANCE OF COAT COLOUR IN DOGS

Why are white GSDs looked down upon? Why is 'colour-paling' a concern? Why do sportspersons in the field prefer black Labradors over yellow?

Eberhard Trumler, in his book, "Understanding Your Dog", says:
"Colouring and behaviour are undoubtedly linked; that is nothing extraordinary since both the nervous system and the skin originate - in the early embryonic stage known as the gastrula - from the outer layer of cells or ectoderm. This outer layer of cells also develops the brain and the rest of the nervous system as well as the skin, with its hair and pigmentation. It is perhaps true to say that colour is the outward and visible sign of the entire 'nerve apparatus' . . . .Alsatian (GSD) experts frequently maintain that the 'pigmented' dog - in other words, one with black in his coat - is livelier than lighter-coloured Alsatians (GSDs). Very recently, precise proof has been forthcoming that there is something in this connection between black colouring and temperament, at least in dogs. Zdenko Martinek of Prague, who has been carrying out research into behaviour, developed a method of measuring activity in dogs, and this showed that the black specimens of a certain breed were livelier than those of other colours."
