"Keep your dog under threshold."

It's a phrase we hear a lot in behaviour work, but it can sound much more complicated than it really is.

In simple terms, you want your dog to be able to notice the thing they're worried or excited about without becoming so overwhelmed that they can no longer respond, think or make choices.

Under threshold is when they are capable of learning and when your training will be effective . If your dog is already reactive commands / learning can’t happen in that moment.

Sometimes a dog can want to approach something and want to move away from it at the same time.

That conflict can look confusing, moving forward and backing away, approaching and then retreating, barking while still trying to get closer.

It doesn't always mean your dog has "made up their mind" about what they want. Sometimes, they're simply struggling with two competing emotions at once.

Understanding that can change how we respond to the behaviour. 🐾

Your puppy's first few months aren't just about teaching them to sit, stay or walk nicely on a leash.

They're learning how to experience the world, respond to new things, recover from excitement and feel safe in everyday situations.

That's exactly what our Puppy Group Class is designed to help with, building the foundations for a puppy who can handle real life, not just follow commands.

Some learning experiences stay with you long after they're over.

This was one of them.

I recently completed my certification in evaluating and certifying therapy dogs and their handlers, and it gave me a whole new perspective on what therapy dog work truly involves.

One of my biggest takeaways was this: not every friendly dog is suited for therapy work and that's completely okay. Therapy dogs need the right temperament, emotional stability, and the ability to offer calm, reassuring support in a variety of environments.

I'm excited to continue learning, explore this field further, and hopefully contribute more to therapy dog work in the future.

Here's to new beginnings, lifelong learning, and the incredible bond between dogs and people. 🐾

One of the questions I'm asked most often is:
"How long will it take to train my dog?"

The honest answer is... it depends.

It depends on your dog's age, personality, previous experiences, the behaviour you're working on, and most importantly, how consistently everyone at home is following the plan.

Some skills can be learnt fairly quickly. Others, especially those involving emotions like fear or reactivity, take much longer because they aren't just about teaching a behaviour, they're about changing how a dog feels.

Rather than asking "How long will this take?" I encourage pet parents to ask: "Are we making steady progress?"

Because that's usually a much better measure of success. 🐾

One of the most common pieces of advice pet parents hear is:
"Don't comfort your dog when they're scared, you'll reinforce the fear."
The good news is that fear doesn't work that way.

If your dog is genuinely frightened, offering comfort won't make them "more fearful." In fact, helping your dog feel safe can be an important part of building confidence.

What we do want to avoid is forcing a dog to face something they're not ready for. Confidence grows through positive experiences, not overwhelming ones.

Sometimes, the kindest thing you can do is simply be your dog's safe place. 🐾

People often ask what I carry with me during training sessions and behaviour consultations.

The answer is usually less exciting than they expect. πŸ˜…

A few practical tools, plenty of treats, p**p bags, management equipment, and whatever helps set the dog up for success in that particular situation.

One thing that's almost always in the pouch is a good training reward. I currently use Muttley Crew Training
Treats because they're easy to carry, easy to deliver quickly, and fit naturally into the kind of behaviour work I do every day.

But the most important thing in any training pouch isn't a tool.

It's understanding the dog standing in front of you. 🐾

Not every dog looking at something is worried. And not every dog that looks playful is actually feeling relaxed.

When you're trying to understand your dog, look beyond the obvious.

πŸ‘€ Are they simply observing and moving on?
πŸ‘€ Are they staring intensely with a still body?
πŸ‘€ Or are they suddenly becoming bouncy or playful because they're unsure about the situation?

Behaviour is rarely about one signal in isolation.

The more you observe the whole dog and the context around them, the more accurately you'll understand what they're trying to communicate. 🐾

Ever wondered why your dog suddenly sprints around the house for no reason?

Those "zoomies" are actually called FRAPs (Frenetic Random Activity Periods)- brief bursts of energy that many healthy dogs experience.

They're not always about having too much energy. They can happen after a bath, play, being let off lead, or even after a mildly stressful situation has passed. Context matters.

If your dog's zoomies become unusually frequent, difficult to regulate, or lead to injuries, it's worth speaking to your veterinarian or a qualified behaviour professional. 🐾

One of the biggest misconceptions about toilet training is that puppies have accidents because they're being naughty.

The reality is much simpler.

Young puppies are still developing bladder and bowel control. They're learning a completely new routine, and accidents are simply part of that learning process.

Where things often become more difficult is when puppies are shouted at, punished, or rushed outside after an accident.

Instead of learning where to toilet, they may start learning that toileting around people feels unsafe. That's why some puppies begin hiding behind furniture, sneaking away to another room, or waiting until no one is watching before they go.

Successful toilet training isn't built through punishment.

Like most behaviour, toilet training isn't about correcting mistakes. It's about creating the right learning opportunities. 🐾
