The Little Girl and the Old Shoemaker
Every morning, an old shoemaker named Daniel opened his tiny shop beside a busy street. His hands were rough from years of repairing shoes, but he worked carefully because he took pride in every pair he fixed.
One rainy afternoon, a young schoolgirl named Amara walked into his shop. She stood quietly beside him, holding her worn-out school shoes.
“Can you fix them?” she asked softly.
Daniel looked at the shoes. The soles were badly damaged, and the stitching had almost completely come apart.
“I’ll do my best,” he said with a gentle smile.
Amara looked down at the floor. She was worried because she needed the shoes for school the next morning.
As Daniel began stitching, he noticed tears rolling down her cheeks.
“Why are you crying?” he asked.
Amara wiped her face and whispered, “My mother has been sick for a long time. We don't have enough money to buy new shoes. These are the only ones I have.”
Daniel stopped working for a moment.
He remembered his own childhood—the days when he had worn the same pair of shoes until they were almost impossible to repair.
Without saying anything, he continued working.
After a while, he finished the shoes. He had repaired the sole, replaced the broken stitching, and polished them until they looked almost new.
Amara reached into her pocket and counted the few coins she had.
Daniel gently pushed her hand away.
“Keep your money,” he said.
Amara looked at him with tears in her eyes.
“But I have to pay you.”
Daniel smiled sadly.
“Sometimes, helping someone is more valuable than money.”
Amara put on her repaired shoes. They fit perfectly.
Before leaving, she turned around and said, “When I grow up, I will help someone just like you helped me.”
Daniel watched her walk away through the rain.
He sat quietly in his little shop, looking at the empty chair beside him.
For the first time that day, he smiled.
Because sometimes, a small act of kindness can give someone hope when they need it the most.
