🐦✨ PET GYAAN #83 | Bird Feather Plucking – Don’t Call It Just a Bad Habit!
Is your bird repeatedly pulling, biting or damaging its own feathers? 🪶 Occasional preening is completely normal, but excessive feather plucking can be a sign that something isn’t right.
⚠️ SIGNS TO NOTICE:
• Bald or thinning patches
• Broken or damaged feathers
• Repeated feather biting or pulling
• Excessive preening
• Red, irritated or damaged skin
• Increased feather debris in the cage
• Sudden changes in grooming behaviour
🔍 POSSIBLE REASONS:
• Skin irritation or infection
• Parasites
• Pain or underlying illness
• Nutritional imbalance
• Stress or anxiety
• Boredom or lack of enrichment
• Inadequate sleep or disrupted routine
• Environmental changes
• Hormonal or reproductive influences
✅ WHAT YOU SHOULD DO:
• Consult an avian veterinarian to rule out medical causes
• Provide a balanced, species-appropriate diet
• Maintain a calm and predictable routine
• Provide adequate uninterrupted sleep
• Offer safe toys, foraging activities and enrichment
• Keep the cage and environment hygienic
• Observe when and where the plucking occurs
❌ Never punish or shout at your bird.
❌ Don’t use bitter sprays, creams or home remedies without veterinary advice.
❌ Don’t assume it is simply boredom.
❌ Don’t use collars or cones without an avian vet’s guidance.
🚨 Bleeding, open wounds, severe skin damage, sudden extensive feather loss, weakness or reduced appetite need prompt veterinary attention.
