🐣 FROM NEST BOX TO HAND-RAISING ❤️

A beautiful journey begins! Today at S P Aviary & Farm, we carefully moved our baby cockatiel chicks from the nest box for hand-raising.

Every chick receives gentle handling, proper warmth, hygiene, nutrition, and regular monitoring. 🍼🌡️

Hand-raising is more than just feeding—it requires patience, consistency, responsibility, and careful observation at every stage.

Our goal is simple: healthy, confident, and well-socialized cockatiels. 🐥❤️

NutriBird A19 is a complete hand-feeding formula, but the mixing ratio and feeding amount should be based on the chick’s age and weight.

🦜 How to use A19 safely

1. Prepare fresh formula

Use clean water and clean feeding equipment.

Mix A19 according to the age-specific ratio printed on your A19 packet. The concentration changes as the chick grows.

Aim for roughly 39°C (102°F) when feeding.

Make a fresh batch for each feeding; don't keep leftover formula for the next meal.

2. How much to feed A commonly used starting guide is around 10% of the chick's body weight per feeding, but this is only a guide. The chick's crop should fill comfortably and then empty appropriately between feeds.

For example, a 100 g chick ≈ 10 mL per feeding as a starting reference—not a target to force into the chick.

3. Feeding technique

Feed only when the chick has a good feeding response.

Never force-feed a weak, cold, or poorly responsive chick.

Avoid feeding if the crop is still substantially full from the previous meal.

Keep the chick warm and clean during hand-feeding.

For your birds

African Grey → A19 ✅
Conure → A19 ✅
Cockatiel → A19 can be used, but smaller chicks require especially careful temperature, consistency and feeding technique.

For hand-raised Conure and Cockatiel chicks, taming/training should be gentle and short.

🦜 Conure

Conures are usually very interactive. Start step-up and recall training once the chick is alert, coordinated, and comfortable perching. Use a calm voice and small food rewards.

🐥 Cockatiel

Cockatiels can be a little more cautious. Spend extra time simply letting the chick choose to approach your hand rather than forcing contact.

Important: Never interrupt feeding, sleep, or rest just for training. During hand-feeding/weaning, the priority is proper nutrition and monitoring weight; training should be secondary.

🦜 My top setup tips

Separate every breeding pair

African Grey: individual pair enclosure

Rosella: individual pair enclosure

Cockatiel: individual pair enclosure

Never allow different species to share a breeding cage.

Keep African Greys in the quietest zone

Away from the entrance, customer movement and loud equipment.

Provide visual barriers between neighboring pairs if they become stressed.

Give Rosellas more territorial space

Keep good distance between Rosella pairs.

Avoid placing their cages directly facing another breeding pair.

Place Cockatiels near the more active area

They generally tolerate normal farm activity better, but still need a calm breeding environment.

Ventilation is critical

Use fresh-air intake + exhaust ventilation.

Avoid strong air blowing directly onto the birds or nest boxes.

Keep the room dry and free from ammonia/food dust.

Create a central hygiene/feeding station

Separate bowls and utensils by cage/species.

Clean food and water containers daily.

Have a dedicated area for preparing soft food and supplements.

Quarantine new birds

Keep new arrivals completely separate from the breeding room before introducing them to the farm population.

Ideally have an avian veterinarian establish the appropriate health-screening/quarantine protocol.

Nest boxes should be accessible from outside

This lets you inspect eggs/chicks with much less disturbance.

Don't repeatedly open the box unnecessarily during incubation.

Keep breeding records

Pair ID → mating → eggs → hatch dates → chick ID → weight → parents.

This will become extremely valuable as your breeding program grows.

Install backup power

Especially important for ventilation, lighting and environmental control during Odisha's hot/humid periods.

And ideally, have a small quarantine/isolation room outside the main breeding room rather than bringing new birds directly into this room.
