Scarlet-faced Liocichla

This bird used to act as a reception for bird photographers at the Doi lang bird-watching area a few years ago. However, last year it was absent, and it seems no one could see it. Moreover, this year Doi-lang birdwatching was closed for security reasons. To see this bird is more complicated. Luckily, I got news from a birdwatcher who met this bird at Doi Sanju, then I quickly prepared and went there to see this bird in its natural habitat. We fixed the factors that might disturb this bird's presence at the watching area and waited in the early morning. Finally, this bird presented on time and made us happier.

เจ้านกน้อยหน้าแดงตัวนี้ ครั้งหนึ่งเคยเป็นนกรับแขกบนดอยลาง แต่ปีก่อนหายไปไม่ออกมารับแขกนักดูนกเหมือนเช่นเคย ยิ่งปีนี้ดอยลางปิดเพื่อความปลอดภับ นักถ่ายนกไม่สามารถขึ้นได้ การจะได้เห็นเจ้าแก้มแดงก็เป็นเรื่องยากขึ้นอีก

แต่พอทราบข่าวว่ามีนักดูนกพบเจ้าแก้มแดงที่ดอยสันจุ๊ ลุงก็รีบเดินทางไปทันที เพื่อหวังจะได้เจอเจ้าแก้มแดงชักครั้ง ก่อนขึ้นไปก็ทำการบ้านเรื่องเวลาที่พบนก สิ่งแวดล้อม และปัจจัยกวนต่างๆที่อาจะทำให้นกไม่กล้าโชว์ตัวแบบชัดๆ เมื่อถึงที่หมายเราก็ได้แก้ปัญหาปัจจัยกวนต่างๆ แล้วรอเจ้านกตัวนี้ออกมา และแล้วเมื่อถึงเวลาน้องแก้มแดงก็ออกมาแสดงตัวให้เห็นความสวยงามแบบชัดๆ คุ้มค่ากับเวลาและการเดินทาง

"Scarlet Finch" is the latest of my new birds this year, 2023.
It's super lucky that I found this rare bird in the high mountain during the winter season in Thailand. In the early morning, after isolating myself from crowded birdwatchers at the bar-tailed pheasant station, I went further to where this bird had been found by birdwatchers a few days ago. I tried to see on top of the tree and looked for a red color bird. I spent over twenty minutes finding it on the tree. Finally, I saw the red one on top of the tree. I pointed my camera at that bird and pressed the shutter quickly. It was a brief moment to photograph this bird before it flew away.

A white-bellied redstart in new visitor this winter since absent for a few years in Doi-Sanju. Blue, white, and orange colors in males make it look handsome in my perspective. It was my luck to capture this bird and added to my bird collection.

นกเขนน้อยท้องแดง Daurain Restart

Daurian redstart is another of my favorite visitor bird during the winter season in Thailand. A winter visitor is quite friendly and allows for getting closer. This is why a little Daurian is another poplar bird for the bird photographer.

ว่ากันว่าหนึ่งในนกเทพที่ต้องอยู่ในลิสต์ของนักดูนกทั้งหลายคือเจ้านก " นกแต้วแล้วใหญ่ท้ายทอยสีฟ้า Blue-naped Pitta" เจ้านกตัวนี้เป็นนกกระจายตัวอยู่ในป่าดิบแถวจังหวัดน่าน แพร่ สุโขทัย เลยไปจนถึงจังหวัดเลย เขาว่ากันว่าเจ้าท้ายทอยฟ้านี้เป็นนกประจำถิ่นที่ลึกลับและหายากมาก ลุงมีโอกาสได้ไปเจอเจ้าท้ายทอยฟ้าครั้งแรกที่ อำเภอศรีสัชนาลัย กว่าจะเจอก็ตัวก็ต้องไปรอตั้งแต่เช้ามืด ปัจจุบันหากอยากเจอนกชนิดนี้ก็มี 2 ที่คือที่บ่อนก ลุงโอมห์ ศรีสัชนาลัย และ บ่อนกป๋าหนั่น สันติสุข มีเวลาว่างลองแวะๆนั่งดูเจ้านกตัวนี้กันได้ ไม่ต้องมีกล้องหรูราคาแพง เพราะรับรองว่าทั้งสองที่นี้ใช้กล้องมือถือถ่ายก็ได้

Blue-naped pitta is another rare resident bird in Thailand. This bird distributes in the lowland forest in northern through northeastern Thailand. Blue-naped pitta usually ventures out into clearings only early in the morning and late in the evening. This might be a reason why it is a hard-to-see bird.

นกกระเรียนพันธุ์ยุโรป Common Crane (Eurasian crane)

ลุงเห็นเพื่อนๆนักดูนกเจอเจ้ากระเรียนพันธุ์ยุโรปมาอยู่ในทุ่งบ้านร่องแกลบเป็นคู่ คิดในใจไม่รู้ว่าโอกาสแบบนี้มันจะมีอีกเมื่อไหร่ในเมืองไทย แค่เจอตัวเดียวก็แทบจะทุ่งแตกแล้ว เจอสองตัวอยู่ด้วยกันแบบนี้ คงยิ่งกว่างานปอยหลวงแน่ๆ แต่ลุงก็ต้องทำงานเลี้ยงปากเลี้ยงท้อง อยากไปดูกระเรียนใจจะขาด มานั่งคำนวณมีเวลาชั่วโมงเดียว เพราะแสงเช้าน่าจะเริ่มถ่ายได้ประมาณ 6 โมงครึ่ง อยู่เต็มที่ก็คงได้ถึง 7 โมงครึ่ง แล้วต้องรีบบึ่งรถกลับมาทำงานก่อน 8 โมงครึ่ง แถมไม่รู้ว่านกจะอยู่จุดเดิมไหม แต่ในใจคิดว่าเป็นไงเป็นกัน ไม่เจอก็กลับ ลุงขับรถออกจากบ้านลำปางตั้งแต่ตี 5 ครึ่งไปถึงจุดที่พบนกประจำ 6 โมงเช้านิดๆ เดินลงจากรถแหงนมองฟ้า เจอเจ้ากระเรียนคู่บินผ่านหน้าแล้วไปหายลับไปอีกฟากของทั่งกว้าง ในใจก็บอกว่าแห้วแน่ๆเช้านี้ แต่ในความโชคร้ายก็ยังมีความโชคดีอยู่ ขณะที่จะกลับรถกลับ ชาวบ้านใจดีขี่มอเตอร์ไซต์ ผ่านมา บอกว่านกกระเรียนคู่นี้บินลงอีกฝั่งของทุ่ง พร้อมบอกทางไปอีกด้านของทุ่งอย่างละเอียด พอจอดรถที่ป่าช้าบ้านร่องแกลบ ก็ถือกล้องเดินไปที่ขอบทุ่ง พลันเหลือบตาไปเห็นเจ้านกกระเรียนคู่นี้คุ้ยเขี่ยหากินเมล็ดข้าวอย่างเอร็ดอร่อย เลยกดบันทึกภาพอย่างตื่นเต็น นั่งมองเจ้ากระเรียนคู่นี้หากินตามธรรมชาติอยู่ซักพัก ก็ถึงเวลาต้องกลับมาทำงาน แม้ใจอยากจะอยู่ถ่ายทั้งวัน แต่อย่างน้อยเวลา 1 ชั่วโมงที่ได้เห็นเจ้ากระเรียนพันธ์ุยุโรปตัวเป็นๆ ถึง 2 ตัวในทุ่งหญ้าธรรมชาติ แค่นี้ก็มีควาสุขมากๆแล้ว ขอบคุณ ชาวบ้าน บ้านร่องแกลบ ที่ช่วยกันหวงแหนดูแลนกกระเรียน อาคันตุกะจากแดนไกลคู่นี้เป็นอย่างดีครับ

ถ้าจะให้ลุงลำดับความยากในการถ่ายภาพนกที่มีความเร็วจัดจ้านชนิดที่ว่า “เดอะแฟรช” ต้องเรียกพ่อ ก็ต้องยกให้นกตระกูล “จู๋” ทั้งหลาย แต่ถ้าจากประสบการณ์ของลุงเอง ลุงคิดว่าเจ้า “นกจุนจู๋หัวเหลือง Slaty-bellied Tesia” นี่แหละที่น่าจะเร็วและยากที่สุดละ เรียกว่าเป็น “ตัวตึงบนดอยสูง” เจ้านกตัวนี้อาศัยอยู่ในพื้นที่ป่าดิบสูง บริเวณลำธารหรือป่าน้ำซับ เช่น ดอยอินทนนท์ ดอยลาง แต่ด้วยความน่ารักของเจ้านกตัวนี้ ก็ทำให้นักถ่ายภาพนกยอมเฝ้ารอและหัวปวดกับการเคลื่อนที่กระโดดไปมาอย่างรวดเร็ว ไร้ทิศทาง เรียกว่าถ่ายเสร็จก็คอเคล็ดไปตามกัน ใครอยากลองมาฝึกความเร็วสายตาและสมาธิก็ลองมาถ่าย เจ้าจุนจู๋หัวเหลือง กันครับ

“Slaty-bellied Tesia” is the fastest-movement bird that I have photographed. This bird is found in Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Laos, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand, and Vietnam. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and montane forests. Small in size, fast movement, and unpredictable direction makes capturing photos of this bird difficult. However, this is challenging for a bird photographer that needs to capture a cute bird in its natural habitat.

ซามูไรเพนจร เหยี่ยวนกเขาพันธุ์ญี่ปุ่น

หลายครั้งที่ลุงไปนั่งเงียบอยู่ในบังไพร และโฟกัสแค่ยบ่อน้ำตรงหน้า โดยหวังว่าจะได้บันภาพนกหรือสัตว์ที่เข้ามาใช้บริการบ่อน้ำเพื่อดับกระหายคลายร้อน ส่วนใหญ่ก็จะได้ภาพที่เป็นนกหรือสัตว์ประจำถิ่น บ้างครั้งก็แห้วนั่งทั้งวันไม่ได้อะไรเลย หรือบางครั้งก็โชคดีเหมือนถูกหวย ที่ได้พบกับนกอพยบบินผ่านและแวะมาพักให้หายเหนื่อยก่อนเดินทางต่อไป
The visitor: Japanese Sparrowhawk

This kind of bird is a visitor in winter Thailand. They will migrate from the breeding habitat in China, Japan, Korea, and Siberia during the winter, passing through southeast Asia to Indonesia and Philippines. I was lucky to capture the moment this bird landed in the well to rest and drink water in the Chiang Mai forest. I hope that I will be able to see this handsome bird again in the next migrant season.

The Wild elephant in northern Thailand

In Thailand, the wild elephant population is around 3500 - 4000, estimably. The significant population is in the middle, eastern, and western forest areas. Even though the wild elephant population exists in northern Thailand also, it is not easy to see those wild elephants. I was lucky to see and photograph the wild elephant walking on the road in the high mountain area. This made my heartbeat increase when this elephant was walking close to me. Seeing the living giant in its natural habitat was a fantastic moment.
