Three days of learning, sharing, hands-on experience and clinical excellence at the 4th CSAVA Annual Congress 2026, Chennai.

From hands-on endoscopy and orthopaedics to advanced clinical discussions, every session brought something new to take back to practice. It was equally rewarding to share my own clinical experience through the National Clinical Case Contest and be recognised with the Second Prize in Stand-Alone Practice for my case presentation.

Grateful for the opportunity to learn from experienced colleagues, exchange ideas and stay updated with the evolving landscape of small-animal medicine and surgery.

FPV TESTING IS NOT JUST ABOUT “POSITIVE” OR “NEGATIVE.” 🐱🧪

A kitten can have a positive stool SNAP but a negative blood PCR. Another kitten may have clinical signs but a negative test. So which result should we trust?

The answer is: look at the whole patient.

FPV test interpretation should always consider:

🩺 Clinical signs
🧪 CBC & leukocyte count
💉 Vaccination history
🧬 Type and source of the PCR sample
⏱️ Timing of testing

A stool antigen test and a blood PCR are not necessarily answering the same biological question. A single test result should never replace clinical reasoning.

Be a complete doctor—not just a lab technician.

Treat the patient, not just the numbers on the report.

Your dog’s tick-borne disease PCR can change.. and it doesn’t always mean a new infection. 🐶

A dog may test positive for Ehrlichia, receive treatment, improve clinically, and later test negative.

Then another PCR may show Babesia gibsoni or another tick-borne pathogen.

Does that automatically mean the dog caught a new infection? Not necessarily.

Pathogen levels in the bloodstream can fluctuate. Some organisms can fall below the PCR detection limit and later become detectable again.

Dogs can also have coinfections, where one pathogen is detectable while another remains below the detection threshold.

That’s why we interpret PCR alongside:
🩸 Platelet count
🔬 Blood smear
🧪 CBC & biochemistry
🌡️ Clinical signs
💊 Treatment history
🧬 Serial PCR results

PCR is a snapshot—not the entire story of the infection.

We often see a patient with an SpO₂ of 98–100% and assume oxygenation is fine. But is it really? 🫁 SpO₂ is only the beginning. Blood Gas tells the bigger story.

We often see a patient with an SpO₂ of 98–100% and assume oxygenation is fine. But is it really?

Think of it like a school bus 🚌:

🔹 SpO₂ tells us how many oxygen “seats” on haemoglobin are occupied.
🔹 PaO₂ tells us about the oxygen tension in arterial blood.
🔹 PaCO₂ tells us whether the patient is actually ventilating and removing CO₂.
🔹 pH, HCO₃⁻ and BE help us understand the acid–base status.
🔹 And when the patient cannot ventilate adequately, mechanical ventilation can take over part of the work of breathing while we treat the underlying disease.

The important lesson is simple:

Oxygenation ≠ ventilation.

A patient can have a reassuring SpO₂ and still have severe hypercapnia, acid–base disturbance or respiratory failure—particularly when supplemental oxygen is being administered.

That’s why, in the critically ill patient, don’t just look at the number. Understand the physiology behind it.

E & A waves are more than just measurements on an echocardiogram. 🫀🐾

Understanding what E and A represent, where exactly to place the PW Doppler sample volume, how to measure them correctly, and—most importantly—why we are measuring them is what transforms echocardiography from simply acquiring images into meaningful cardiac assessment.

As veterinarians, we should not perform echocardiography merely as a technical exercise. Every measurement should answer a clinical question and be interpreted in the context of the patient, other echocardiographic parameters, and haemodynamics.

Because doing echocardiography is a technician’s job. Understanding why you are doing it, interpreting what you find, and integrating it with the clinical picture—that is the cardiologist’s job.

Learn the why, not just the how. 🫀
