99% SpO₂ does NOT always mean your patient is safe.

A pulse oximeter tells you how well oxygen is being carried by the blood—but it does not tell you whether your patient is removing CO₂ effectively.

Think of the lungs as a room with two doors:

🚪 One door brings oxygen in.
💨 The other door—the exhaust—removes CO₂.

The oxygen door can be wide open while the exhaust door is blocked.

So your patient can have SpO₂ 99% while CO₂ is quietly building up.

That is the difference between:

Oxygenation ≠ Ventilation

Don’t just ask, “Is the patient breathing?”
Ask, “Is the patient ventilating?”

Pulse oximetry measures oxygenation, not ventilation. A patient can have normal oxygen saturation while carbon dioxide (CO₂) silently builds up to dangerous levels.

Not every cat with ascites has FIP.

No single test can definitively confirm FIP….every diagnostic test has its limitations. The diagnosis comes from combining history, physical examination, imaging, laboratory findings, and clinical judgment.
