If you own a guinea pig or a rabbit, they have a literal superpower: their teeth NEVER stop growing! In fact, they can grow up to 2 to 3 inches every single year.
Because their cheek molars are hidden so far back, severe dental overgrowth can happen completely out of sight.
⚠️ Why Does This Happen?
In the wild, these animals forage on tough, coarse vegetation all day. At home, if their diet lacks enough coarse fiber, or if they have a slight genetic jaw misalignment, those back molars don’t wear down evenly. They form razor-sharp points (called spurs) that can lacerate their tongue, cut their cheeks, or even lock their jaw shut.
🛠️ How We Fix It (Featuring our 5-year-old patient!)
Today, we performed a gentle dental trimming on this sweet 5-year-old guinea pig.
The Tool: We use a specialized, high-speed dental burr under safe sedation.
Why not clippers? Manual clipping can shatter the tooth structure and crack the roots. A dental burr precisely files and reshapes the molars down to a smooth, comfortable, natural bite line.
🌾 Prevention Starts in the Food Bowl
You can prevent dental disease at home! Ensure your pet’s diet is 80% unlimited, high-quality grass hay (like Timothy or Orchard grass). The natural side-to-side grinding motion required to chew hay acts as a natural nail file for their teeth.

Drooling or a wet chin (“slobbers”)
Dropping pieces of food while chewing
Sudden pickiness (eating soft pellets but refusing hard hay)

🚨 PUPPY PARENTS: A simple jump can change everything in a split second! 🐾👇
Meet this adorable 6-month-old Poodle who recently came to Pet Chikitsa after a sudden injury. The diagnosis? A Left Tibial Crest Avulsion Fracture.
What does that mean in simple terms?
In growing puppies, the bones aren’t fully solid yet. The “tibial crest” is a bony bump just below the knee where the powerful thigh muscle attaches via a tendon. Because a puppy’s growth plates are still soft, a sudden, hard land from a jump or a twist can actually pull that piece of bone right off.
Left untreated, the puppy wouldn’t be able to extend their leg properly.
The Fix 🛠️
Our orthopedic surgical team stepped in to perform a precise Tension Band Wiring procedure. By placing two small pins (K-wires) and looping a surgical wire in a figure-eight pattern, we neutralized the pulling forces of the muscle. This mechanically forces the bone fragment back into its original position so it can fuse perfectly.
The Recovery 🎉
Thanks to a successful surgery and a wonderful, dedicated owner managing strict crate rest, this little champ has recovered beautifully and is back to pain-free puppy antics!
⚠️ Owner Awareness Tip:
Growing puppies have boundless energy but fragile growth plates. Between 4 to 9 months of age, try to avoid letting your pups jump off high beds, couches, or cars. If your pup suddenly holds a hind leg up after a jump, don’t just “wait and see”—early intervention makes all the difference!
