Superfoods in Your Kitchen: Healthy Dog Treats

1.Nutrient-dense foods carry extra nutritional (vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, etc.) value which is expected to have an immediate positive impact on your dog’s health and overall nutrition.

2. Act as a natural supplement to help give your dog energy, strengthen their immune system, help them sleep, regulate their blood oxygen levels, support their cognitive health, stronger bones, and joints, relieve inflammation, heal their digestive system, and much more.

HERE, ARE A FEW EXAMPLES OF SUCH FOODS ARE:

A. OATMEAL 🥣
Excellent replacement for kibble with high fiber content which helps in regulating bowel movement.

B. CHICKPEAS 🧆
Energy-boosting carbohydrates, essential amino acids, and the numerous additional nutrients it provides such as Vitamin A, potassium, magnesium, and folate.

C. SWEET POTATO 🍠
Important antioxidants such as beta-carotene are loaded along with different vitamins and minerals such as Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin B3, Vitamins B5, Vitamin B6, manganese, and copper.

D. PUMPKIN p🎃
Helps improve your pet's eye health, skin, and coat. Generally given to pets with an upset stomach.

E. CARROTS 🥕
Boiled carrot helps in weight management due to its high satiety index, low calories along with a bunch of fibers and vitamins.

*Additional benefits: frozen carrots when given during the puppyhood/ teething phase alleviate their nibbling behavior and soothe the gum discomfort. Good for even older pets for dental health.

E. DAHI 🍚
Avoids the problem of lactose intolerance due to milk feeding. Contains protein and calcium in a good amount and also improves the gut microflora hence improving digestion. Acts as a cooling agent in summers, reducing the risks of heat stress.

F. EGGS 🥚🥚
Probably the best source of protein with equally good amounts of essential fatty acids (cholesterol) and loads of vitamin -minerals. However, feeding raw eggs might expose them to Salmonella infection.

G. CHICKEN 🐓🐔
A good source of lean meat means high protein without much of a calorie count. Care should be taken to feed cooked chicken, minus salt, and avoid bones.

H. COCONUT 🥥
Again a good source of essential fatty acids. Excellent supplement for dry/flaky skin or poor fur coat. Also good for joint mobility in middle to old-aged dogs as contains phenolic components which have anti-oxidant properties.

Let's discuss very common yet ignored disorder in dogs and cats🐕

UNDESCENDED TESTICLES

• Normal descend of testicle from abdomen into sc***um occurs upto 3 but rarely might occur after 6 months of age.
• In case of retained single or both testicles (te**es) inside abdomen or inguinum (passage/canal through which the testicle passes normally) is known as Cryptorchidism.

CAUSES 🤔
• Inherited/ Genetic abnormality that passes on through breeding to next generation.
• Cryptorchid dogs do not fit the breeding standard. Hence, they should never be breed.

SIGNS😵😵
• The retained testicles continue to produce testosterone but generally fail to produce s***m. Hence, male behaviour remains due to normal testosterone production.
• If both te**is fail to descend, pet might be sterile.
• No pain noticed unless any complications.
• Excessively aggressive and urine marking present.
• Rarely noticed abnormalities associated with cryptorchidism include male urinating in squatting posture (like female), hip dysplasia, pain during urination, poor skin coat etc.

CONFIRMATORY TEST🧐🧐
• Radiographs or abdominal USG

BENEFITS OF TIMELY NEUTERING😊😊
• The first reason is to remove the genetic defect from the breed line.
• Avoids development of testicular tumor in the retained testicle (10 times more chances of occurence than normal one).
• Reduces chances of s***matic cord torsion might cause severe abdominal pain and necrosis due to hampered blood supply.

BONE CANCER-OSTEOSARCOMA.... Sounds Scary Right ?? Let's see what experts have to say about the disease.

• Aggressive and most common bone cancer potent of spreading to other parts of the body (malignant).
• Medium to large breed older (average 9 years) dogs predisposed.
• Most often, affecting limbs (80%) but can be seen in other parts like the face, spine, or ribs.

* CAUSATIVE FACTORS MIGHT INCLUDE

•1. Diets that encourage a rapid growth rate.
•2. History of bone fracture or damage
•3. Genetic mutations (p53 tumor suppressor gene)
•4. Ionizing radiation \chemical carcinogens \ bone implants.

*SIGNS

•1. Lameness
•2. Lethargic, appetite loss
•3. Swelling near the knee or below the elbow
•4. Repeated fractures with severe pain.

*DIAGNOSIS

•1. X-rays: Typical "moth-eaten" appearance on radiographs.
•2. Blood tests: ALP levels to determine prognosis
•3. Bone biopsy: differentiate between Osteoma and OSA.
•4. Tissue histopath to rule out fungal infection/ soft tissue tumor/cyst.

*TREATMENT

•1. Amputation and Chemotherapy
•2. Limb sparing surgery (only affected part of the bone removed and replaced with grafts or metal implants.
•3. Radiation therapy

Diabetes occurs when your dog's body (pancreas, specifically) makes too little insulin, stops producing it completely, or has an abnormal insulin response.

We can think of insulin as the key to a lock. The cells need the “key” (insulin) to let the glucose in.

When glucose can’t get into the cells without insulin, it builds up in the blood. This causes hyperglycemia, meaning too much sugar in the blood aka high blood sugar.

**Signs Of Diabetes in Dogs**

1. Frequent urination, sugar in the urine (glucosuria)
2. Hunger
3. Weight loss
4. Cloudy eyes (glaucoma)
5. Vomiting
6. Weakness or fatigue
7. Neurological signs, epilepsy due to secondary ketoacidosis

**Management**

1. High protein and fiber with a less carb diet. Give the food
followed by insulin at the same time every day.
2. Getting female dogs spayed.
3. Daily exercise to maintain weight.
4. Daily tracking of blood glucose level.
5. Treatment must be considered part of the dog's daily routine as
they generally require two insulin injections daily.

Most dogs with controlled diabetes live a good quality of life with few symptoms of the disease.
