Making Turmeric Processing Faster, Simpler & Farmer-Friendly

Turmeric processing can be time-consuming and labour-intensive, especially when slicing is done manually with knives. Addressing this challenge, ICAR-RC NEH, Umiam, Meghalaya has developed a Manually Operated Turmeric Slicer—a lightweight, portable and electricity-free solution designed for farmers in hilly and resource-constrained regions.

With pedal- or hand-operated modes, the slicer can process 38 kg of turmeric per hour with single-person operation, compared with 9.5 kg/h through traditional knife slicing. With two-person pedal operation, capacity can reach 57 kg/h. The machine also produces relatively uniform slices, supporting more consistent drying, and can be used for ginger, beetroot and potato.

A simple innovation that reduces drudgery, improves small-scale processing efficiency and brings practical mechanisation closer to farmers. The day raises awareness about the importance of reducing food loss and waste to build more sustainable, resilient and food-secure agri-food systems.

This year’s theme, “Transformative Potential of Reducing Food Loss and Waste,” highlights how minimising losses across the agri-food chain—from harvest and storage to processing and consumption—can strengthen food security, farmer livelihoods and environmental sustainability.

🐾 World Rabies Day 2026 at ICAR–IVRI, Izatnagar

“Stronger Together” — the theme of World Rabies Day 2026 — aptly reminds us that preventing rabies requires collective action by veterinarians, pet owners, researchers, students and the community.

On 28 September 2026, the Veterinary Clinical Complex, ICAR–IVRI, Izatnagar, observed World Rabies Day with a Free Anti-Rabies Vaccination Camp for companion animals. 39 pet owners availed free anti-rabies vaccination for their dogs and cats, reinforcing the importance of responsible pet care and preventive vaccination in protecting both animal and human health. The programme witnessed active participation from scientists, clinicians and undergraduate and postgraduate students, providing a valuable platform for learning, awareness and community engagement.

ICAR–IVRI gratefully acknowledges the support of Zoetis India Ltd. in making the vaccination programme possible. Together, through awareness, responsible vaccination and One Health action, we can move closer to a rabies-free future.

A Day of Learning, Discovery and Meaningful Engagement at ICAR-IVRI

It was a privilege to welcome the Uttar Pradesh Combined State/Upper Subordinate Service Probationary Officers to the ICAR–Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Izatnagar, on 26 September 2026.

The visit offered an opportunity to experience the rich legacy and contemporary contributions of ICAR-IVRI in veterinary education, research, animal health and innovation. The interactions and institutional exposure provided a valuable platform for sharing perspectives and appreciating the vital role of veterinary science in advancing livestock health, food security and rural development.

A day well spent in exploring, learning and connecting—creating meaningful memories and opening avenues for continued engagement.
