HCM in Cats: What Is It and Why Does It Happen?

Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) is one of the most common heart diseases seen in cats. It causes the heart muscle to become abnormally thick, making it harder for the heart to relax and fill with blood.

Why does HCM occur?
In many cats, HCM is linked to inherited genetic changes, particularly in certain breeds

Some cats may show no obvious signs for years, while others can develop rapid breathing, lethargy, weakness, or even blood clots.

Regular veterinary check-ups and cardiac screening can help detect heart disease early.

A healthy-looking cat can still have an underlying heart condition.

This case presented with abnormal tissue growth around the joint that initially raised concern for cancer. However, the location and pattern of the changes made us question that possibility.

Bone cancers such as osteosarcoma commonly occur in specific regions of the long bones, more often away from the elbow joint and towards the knee joint. In this case, the changes were centred around the joint, which prompted us to investigate further.

Further evaluation revealed the actual cause: reactive synovial hyperplasia, a non-cancerous proliferation of the synovial tissue lining the joint.

The overgrowth of this tissue was restricting the normal movement and flexibility of the joint, making the case look much more concerning than it actually was.

This is why location, clinical examination and proper diagnostic evaluation all matter. An unusual growth doesn’t automatically mean cancer.

Not every abnormal growth is cancer. Sometimes, the body is reacting to an underlying problem. 🩺🐶
