A small note for people who feed street dogs or even their own dogs with love and good intentions.
A lot of people feed dogs mainly chicken waste, fatty skin, intestines, bread, biscuits, chapati, sugary snacks, and leftover junk food. Dogs may eat it happily, but over time it can create digestive issues, skin problems, bad smell, obesity, and poor health.
I’m not saying my way is the only way, but over the years I’ve found a simple, cheaper, and healthier feeding style that works very well.
A good base meal can include boiled vegetables like:
• Pumpkin
• Bottle gourd (lauki)
• Carrot
• Sweet potato (occasionally)
• Yam
Boil the vegetables well. You can mash them, grate them, or puree them depending on how many dogs you feed. Don’t throw away the vegetable water — use it as part of the broth.
Then add a small amount of protein:
• Raw minced chicken
• Beef
• Sardines or mackerel
• Paneer
• Dahi/curd
Rotate ingredients instead of feeding the same thing daily.
A few important points:
• Avoid heavily processed human food
• Avoid excess fat and oily scraps
• Never feed cooked bones — they can splinter and become dangerous
• Raw bones can be beneficial for many dogs when introduced properly and supervised
• Add extra water to make the meal hydrating and easier to digest
Even feeding one healthy meal a week to street dogs can make a difference.
Healthy food does not always mean expensive food. Sometimes simple, balanced, homemade food is far better than waste food given in the name of kindness.
Feed with awareness, not just emotion.
