After 12 failed inseminations, a handful of herbs did what nothing else could:
Repeat breeding in cattle and buffaloes is increasing day by day, silently draining the dairy farmer’s profit. Through NDDB’s ethnoveterinary programme, more than 28,810 cases of repeat breeding have been recorded, with a success rate of around 68 %. The following field case from Punjab, reported by Dr. Gurpreet Kumar, is one more example of how the EVM approach can turn a hopeless repeat breeder back into a productive animal.
Farmer: Manjit Kaur
Village: Hathan, Kheri Khurd
Animal: 5-year-old buffalo
Problem: Repeat breeding syndrome – never conceived in her life.
For years, Manjit Kaur had just one wish for her buffalo: that she would finally conceive. But nothing worked. Despite everything the family tried —
• 10–12 artificial insemination attempts
• 3–4 natural matings
• Mineral mixtures and reproductive powders
• Several intrauterine cleanings
…her 5-year-old buffalo had never once become pregnant. Like many farmers facing "repeat breeding," Manjit Kaur was close to giving up.
Baani MPC under the leadership of Dr. Navdeep Dham, has been involve in NDDB’s EVM project since 2017-18. In January 2026, as per his advice, Dr. Gurpreet Kumar visited Hathan and examined the animal. The diagnosis: repeat breeding.
He advice a Ethnoveterinary Medicine (EVM) formulation, designed to draw out the infection from the uterus. Advised the following ethno-veterinary formulation to be fed to the animal for 20 days starting from the day of occurrence of heat or the next day.
White radish -100 g (one) daily for 4 days (Days 1-4)
Aloe Vera leaf -200 g (One) daily for 4 days. (Days 5-8)
Moringa leaves -100 g (4 handfuls) daily for 4 days. (Days 9-12)
Cissus stem -100 g (4 handfuls) daily of for 4 days. (Days 13-16)
Curry leaves - 100 g (4 handfuls) with turmeric
(10 gms) daily for 4 days (Days 17-20)
These herbal ingredients were fed orally in fresh form in the order provided above once a day along with jaggery and salt. Manjit Kaur followed every step with complete dedication.
The Result:
Within just a few days, the long-trapped infection began to clear, with debris visibly expelled from the uterus.
· The buffalo was successfully inseminated
· Confirmed pregnant – now 5 months along
After five years of disappointment, this family is finally expecting new life on their farm !
💡 The takeaway: For repeat breeding cases, Ethnoveterinary Medicine EVM can offer an effective and affordable route back to fertility — as Smt. Manjit Kaur’s buffalo clearly shows.
