HOW TO PREPARE FOR A PUPPY
- Pour cold apple juice on the carpet in several places and walk around barefoot in the dark.
- Wear a sock to work that has had the toe shredded by a blender.
- Cover all your best clothes with dog hair. Dark clothes must use white hair, and light ones must use dark hair.
- Also float some hair in your first cup of coffee in the morning.
- Play "catch" with a wet tennis ball.
- Leave your underwear on the living room floor because that's where the
dog will drag it anyway. (Especially when you have company.)
- Put chocolate pudding on the carpet in the morning, and don't try to clean it up until you return from work that evening.
- Gouge the leg of the dinning room table several times with a screwdriver -it's going to get chewed on anyway.
- Take a warm and cuddly blanket out of the dryer and immediately wrap it around yourself. This is the feeling you will get when your puppy falls asleep on your lap.

The fancy sports car, the new computer, the pricey camera, the tricked out mountain bike…

Regardless how much you spent, or how much thought, effort and expertise went into making these and other amazing but complex items a reality—without specific, deep, and well-practiced knowledge about how to actually use them how they were intended, they will remain expensive/cool things with amazing potential…that you are sadly unable to utilize and enjoy.

And thus, it’s the precisely the same with dog training. The very best training in the world means absolutely nothing if you are unable to utilize/implement it due to lack of knowledge.

So what’s an owner to do? Simple. Demand that your trainer trains you at least as rigorously as they have your dog. And if your trainer is unable to provide this most critical aspect of the training process, it’s time to find a trainer who can actually do their job—the entire job.

If This Is Your Puppy's First Diwali...
Here are a few tips to help you if you are worried about how your pup will react to firecracker sounds.
- Many pups are typically fine through the season, but some may react with apprehension or fear to the fireworks. When a dog is scared, they typically look to their role models (which can be you or a dog at home) for your reaction. It is important for you to behave in a calm, happy manner around your puppy at this time.
- If you have a grown up dog who is scared of firecracker noises living with the pup, it is very likely that the pup will copy the older dog's anxious behaviour. It would be wise to separate them for the concerned period of time. In fact, it would be prudent to expose your pup to a dog that is least bothered by the noises.
- If your pup does get scared, encourage her to go into a small corner or under the furniture or wherever she feels safe (small confined spaces can help a dog feel safer). Do not try to make her sit in places where she maybe uncomfortable.
- If your pup is scared, it is alright to hold her or reassure her if that helps reduce her fear. Some dogs like to be reassured whereas other prefer to be left alone. Do what suits your dog.
- NEVER expose your pup to firecrackers with the intent of showing your pup its a harmless sound. Dogs cannot understand that and you will definitely create a fear where there is none.
- When frightened, a lot of dogs will urinate or chew items lying around the house in an attempt to relieve the stress brought on by the fear. Do not punish your dog for destruction or house soiling caused by anxiety or fear. It is the result of panic, not misbehaviour. Punishment will do more harm than good.
