A good news story to end the weekend, Brandy the spaniel which was stolen recently in Trim was found in Ballyfermot this evening. It's hard to put into words how his 85yr old owner Sean felt when they were reunited. Thank you everyone for your vigilance and help in getting him back.

Heifer with IBR -breathtaking difficulty
Around 70% of Irish cattle farms have been exposed to the virus. IBR spreads by close contact between animals although airborne spread of virus may occur over distances of up to 5 metres and it can also be spread by using contaminated semen, equipment and by people.

Following infection, all animals develop an immune response but the virus is not completely eliminated and the virus lies dormant in their bodies. During this time the animal will not shed virus but episodes of stress (mixing in marts, calving, transport etc) can lead to reactivation and spreading of the virus. and re-excretion. These animals are key for the introduction and maintenance of infection in farms.

Affected animals have a fever, do not eat, are very depressed, are slow to rise, and stand with the head held lowered. There is a purulent discharge from the eyes and nostrils. This may be accompanied by a decrease in milk yields.

IBR can be present in your farm subclinically where it dosent mainfest itself in outbreaks of pneumonia but can be silently reducing the productivity of the herd by reducing milk yields

Endocarditis affecting heart valves in the cow

Heart failure
Have a look at this cows jugular vein and you can clearly see a positive jugular pulse going all the way up her neck. This is not normal. the heart is not functioning properly so the blood is damning back up her jugular vein eventually she will develop swelling under her jaw.
With the stethoscope we can hear a murmur. She had a bad metritis or womb infection about a month ago and in its likely that she developed a bacteraemia or infection circulating in her bloodstream. Some of these bacteria Attached to her heart valves giving rise to the Murmur.
She may respond to intensive medication,But the key message is to make sure all chronic infections especially of the womb are dealt with or better still prevented altogether.

This heifer was one of a number with very pasty diarrhea. She was dribbling slightly from the mouth and her food intake was down. Others in the group were affected in a similar manner. She and her comrades were on a finishing diet including whole crop wheat and other rapidly fermentable carbohydrates.
Rumen acidosis is a metabolic disease of cattle. For every animal that shows clinical signs, there will be several more which are affected sub-clinically.
Acidosis is said to occur when the pH of the rumen falls to less than 5.5 (normal is 6.5 to 7.0). In many cases the pH can fall even lower. The fall in pH has two effects. Firstly, rumen contractions slow or stop. This depresses appetite and production.
Secondly, the change in acidity changes the rumen flora, with acid-producing bacteria taking over. They produce more acid, making the acidosis worse. The increased acid is then absorbed through the rumen wall, causing metabolic acidosis, which in severe cases can lead to shock and death.
For these animals the nutritionist advised some dietary changes including long-fiber straw in the diet which reduces the risk of subacute ruminal acidosis by encouraging saliva production (high In bicarbonate)during chewing and by increasing rumination after feeding.
Yeast products and acid based balancer was also used to counteract the rumen acidity.
These animals recovered well after the dietary change and the food intakes and performance improved once again
