Meet Puss 🖤🐈‍⬛

14 year old Puss came in for a dental procedure today. We carried out a pre-anaesthetic blood test. This showed us his kidney function was poor. As a result, we tailored his anaesthetic and pain relief plan just for him.

Because kidney disease and high blood pressure often go hand in hand with cats, we also checked his blood pressure and performed an eye exam to check for signs of hypertension before sedation. While he was under anaesthetic, one of our nurses used a multi-parameter machine to closely assess his vital signs - oxygen levels, ECG, blood pressure etc.

We also take full mouth X-rays for every single dental procedure - and this is exactly why.

The picture of the X-ray shows that Puss had two retained tooth roots, hidden behind the gum. This would not be visible during a routine exam alone. Retained tooth roots can be so painful, and continue to cause inflammation, even with the visible part of the tooth gone.

In total, Puss had four teeth removed, and we're sure he'll be much happier and more comfortable now ❤️

Cats are masters at hiding pain. Many owners tell us that their cat is "acting fine", but dental disease is a common cause of chronic pain in cats. Many owners report after dental procedures that their feline friends become brighter and more playful.

And this is why diagnostics matter! Blood tests, blood pressure checks, X-rays and careful monitoring help us to provide the safest anaesthetic possible and uncover painful problems.

Puss is recovering nicely with his devoted owners, and a lot of TLC 🥰

Not every toy should be left unattended!

Toys provide fantastic enrichment for our pets, but it's important to remember that not all of them are safe to leave with them unsupervised.

⚠️ Damaged toys can break apart, creating a risk of swallowing small pieces.
⚠️ Rope toys and long strings can become tangled around a pet's neck, potentially causing strangulation.
⚠️ Squeakers, stuffing, strings and loose parts can be accidentally ingested, leading to potential choking or intestinal blockages.

This might sound a bit over the top, but there’s been a few cases in the media recently of cats and dogs unfortunately suffering fatal injuries when left with their toys unsupervised. We just want to give you a few simple checks can help keep play time safe and fun.

Please remember to keep your dog safe in the heat 🐶🌡
Even temperatures that feel manageable to us can be dangerous for our pets, especially when it comes to bringing them out and about - in the car, or going on walks. Temperatures in cars can rise dangerously fast, even on milder days. Hot pavements can burn paws, and dogs can quickly become overheated, which sadly can be life threatening.
Here are a few simple ways to help keep your dog cool:

🚗Never leave your pets alone in the car
💧Make sure fresh water is always available
🌳Walk dogs early in the morning or later in the evening
🔥Avoid hot pavements and strenuous exercise
☂️Provide cool, shaded areas to rest

Here's what the core cat vaccines protect against:

Feline Herpesvirus: Herpesvirus causes sneezing, nasal congestion, conjunctivitis, discharge from eyes and nose and can also cause painful eye ulcers. It is spread by contact with an infected cat or contact with contaminated objects. Vaccination helps to reduce the severity and length of infection.

Feline Calicivirus: This is a nasty viral infection that causes ulceration of the mouth, fever, sneezing and conjunctivitis. It is highly contagious, and spread by contact with infected cats saliva and remains infectious in the environment for up to a week. Once a cat becomes infected, they can become a carrier of the disease and can have these episodes when they become sick or stressed. Vaccination helps to reduce the severity and length of infection.

Feline Panleucopenia Virus: This is a highly contagious, and often fatal viral infection of cats. Panleucopenia causes fever, lethargy, reduced appetite, vomiting, diarrhoea and a very low white blood cell count. It is spread via contact with infected cats or their faeces, but also can remain in the environment for up to a year. Vaccination provides cats with long lasting immunity against infection.

Feline Leukaemia Virus: This is a retroviral infection, transmitted between cats via infected saliva (sharing food bowls, fighting/cat bites) and urine. We mostly see cases of FeLV in outdoor, un-neutered male cats. It can cause anaemia, cancers, immune mediated disease, neurologic disorders and reproductive issues. There is no cure, ultimately fatal but cats can live a relatively normal life with the disease for periods of time. Vaccination helps reduce the risk of infection.
