CCN remains an important neurological emergency in cattle. Although traditionally attributed to simple thiamine deficiency, increasing evidence highlights the significant role of dietary sulphur toxicity, bracken fern and mycotoxins particularly in modern intensive production systems.

Prompt recognition of early neurological signs, careful evaluation of recent dietary changes and immediate administration of thiamine offer the best opportunity for successful treatment. Equally important is identifying and correcting underlying nutritional or management factors to prevent further cases within the group.

Routine vaccination of your dog helps to protect them against multiple serious and life-threatening illnesses, some of which may be passed to people. Vaccination also helps protect other dogs in the community by reducing the spread of infection.

Yesterday, we held Module 9 of the XLVets Graduate programme, delivered by trainers Jeremiah O Sullivan MVB Cert VR Cert ISELP MRCVS, Clinic na gCapall and Michael O’Connor, MVB, O'Connor Julian Veterinary.

This module covered common equine emergencies in mixed practice. The morning session consisted of a theory session on various topics, followed by an afternoon practical session in O’Connor Julian practice in Cashel. Graduates will have come away from the session with the confidence to deal with handling equine calls in day to day practice.

This module was kindly supported by Duggan Veterinary Ltd.

The XLVets Graduate Programme is a two-year comprehensive mix of 13 practical and theory-based modules, providing essential CPD for a new graduates first job in practice.

Cerebrocortical necrosis (CCN) is a frequent neurological diseases in cattle where rapid recognition and treatment can make the difference between complete recovery and death.

Although the terms CCN and polioencephalomalacia (PEM) are often used interchangeably, PEM simply describes the pathological lesion, i.e the softening of the grey matter of the brain. Several diseases can produce this characteristic lesion, including thiamine deficiency, sulphur toxicity, lead poisoning and salt toxicity. Distinguishing between these causes relies heavily on history, diet and management practices.

Lungworm disease,is the most common cause of coughing in dairy cows. It is caused by the lungworm Dictyocaulus viviparous. Traditionally it was a disease of calves in their first year on grass, and possibly in yearlings in their second grazing season. Now we predominantly see it in dairy cows.

In his recent article as part of our Farm Animal series, Donal Murphy, Sliabh Luachra Veterinary gave an insight into Lungworm disease, highlighting the causes, symptoms and how to protect the herd against infection.
