This little superstar is 11-year-old Rosie, who came to us feeling quite unwell. Her owners had noticed that she was drinking more than usual, was lethargic and simply wasnāt herself.
Vet Louise ran some blood tests, which revealed elevated calcium and kidney values. Further investigation using our ultrasound raised suspicion that Rosieās parathyroid glands were abnormal. To investigate this further, a blood sample was sent to a specialist laboratory in Germany to measure her parathyroid hormone levels. These came back significantly elevated, confirming our suspicions that Rosie had a tumour of her parathyroid gland.
Vet Sarah then performed the delicate surgery to remove the tumour. However, Rosieās journey wasnāt over just yet! ā¤ļø
Following surgery, we needed to monitor Rosie very closely over the next week. Her calcium levels had to be checked regularly, and she was supplemented with calcium and vitamin D until her body could produce and maintain adequate calcium levels on its own again. These were a few anxious days for everyone involved, as calcium levels that drop too low can cause serious complications, including seizures.
Thankfully, Rosie was an absolute star patient! š The whole team was involved in her care, and we all became very fond of her during her stay.
We were absolutely chuffed when Rosieās calcium levels stabilised and she was finally able to head home to her devoted owners. She has since had some really encouraging follow-up checks, which has been wonderful news for everyone! š„°
A huge well done to Rosie for being such a brave girl, and a massive thank you to her dedicated owners for trusting us with her care. š¶š
