๐ด Conquest II & Billy Twomey: The Partnership That Helped Launch a Career ๐ฎ๐ช
Every successful showjumper has horses that leave a lasting mark on their career, and for Irish international rider Billy Twomey, Conquest II was one of the important names in his early years. ๐
A Dutch-bred stallion, Conquest II partnered Twomey as the young Cork rider was establishing himself on the international circuit. At the time, Twomey was based in England and working as stable jockey to legendary British rider Michael Whitaker โ an experience that helped shape the career that followed. ๐ฎ๐ช๐ฌ๐ง
By 1999, Twomey and Conquest II were already producing eye-catching results. At Millstreet that November, they finished third in the Irish Grand Prix, crossing the line just 0.31 seconds behind winner Robert Splaine and Coolcorran Cool Diamond. ๐ฅ
Only weeks later came an even bigger breakthrough. At the World Cup fixture in Oviedo, Spain, the 22-year-old Twomey and Conquest II delivered the only double clear in a four-horse jump-off to secure victory. ๐ It was an important result for a rider beginning to make his presence felt at senior international level.
The partnership continued to flourish in 2000. Records from British Showjumping show Conquest II and Twomey contributing to Irish Nations Cup victories at Modena, Lummen, Dublin and Spruce Meadows. ๐ฎ๐ช๐ Contemporary reporting from Lummen described Conquest II jumping clear again in the second round as Ireland finished comfortably ahead of France.
Then came a particularly memorable moment on home soil. ๐
At the 2000 Dublin Horse Show, Twomey rode Conquest II to victory in the Kerrygold Classic, defeating Britain's Nick Skelton and Showtime. The result was reported at the time as Twomey's first senior international victory โ a major milestone for the 23-year-old rider. ๐ฅ
Twomey would go on to build an outstanding international career, representing Ireland at major championships and the London 2012 Olympic Games, while recording victories around the world. But partnerships such as the one with Conquest II helped build those foundations.
More than two decades later, the results tell a wonderful story: a talented young Irish rider, a hugely competitive stallion and a partnership capable of delivering on some of showjumping's biggest stages. ๐โจ๐ฎ๐ช
Conquest II wasn't simply another name on Billy Twomey's early ride list โ he was part of the journey that helped announce Twomey on the international stage. โค๏ธ๐
