The official start of muddy-paw season is almost here. Which type of pet do you live with?

🐾 The dog who finds the only puddle on a perfectly dry path
🐾 The dog who insists the sofa is the best place to dry off
🐾 The cat who looks personally offended by one raindrop
🐾 The pet who comes back from being out in the rain twice the size they left

Found a tick on your four-legged friend? Don't be tempted to pull, squeeze or cover it in anything to make it let go…that can actually make things worse.

Instead, remove it as soon as you can using a proper tick-removal tool and following the instructions provided. If you're not confident doing it yourself, your vet will happily show you how.

Before summer disappears completely, we want to see your pet's highlight of the season.

Maybe it was:

🐾 A beach adventure
🐾 A new walking trail
🐾 A garden nap in exactly one patch of sun
🐾 Simply more time with their favourite humans

Share a photo below and tell us what made your pet's summer.

Late summer and early autumn can be a busy time for ticks. They love mild, damp conditions, so it's a good time to do a post-walk check.

Feel all over for a small bump, paying extra attention to:

🐾 Around the ears
🐾 Under the collar
🐾 Around the neck
🐾 Between the toes
🐾 Under the front legs and around the tummy

Check your dog after every walk, and your cat daily if you can.

Still seeing fleas after treatment?

It doesn’t make sense…you have treated your pet, so why are fleas still appearing?

It usually doesn’t mean the product has failed. Flea eggs, larvae and pupae can be hiding in carpets, bedding, sofas and other places your pet loves to snooze which then emerge as new adult fleas over the following weeks.

Our latest Pet Health First blog explains why fleas can seem to keep coming back, what to do at home and when it is time to ask your vet for help.

A spot-on treatment only works properly when it reaches the skin, not just the fur.

Here is a quick guide:
1. Part the coat at the back of the neck, where your pet cannot lick.
2. Place the tip directly onto the skin.
3. Apply the full contents as directed, then let the area dry naturally.

In multi-pet homes, keep pets apart until the area is dry so they cannot groom each other.

Always choose the correct product and dose for your pet and read the label and leaflet before use. If you’re unsure, ask your vet, pharmacist or qualified pet-care retailer.

Save this for the next time you apply a spot-on.

A slightly fishy kiss is one thing, but bad breath can be one sign that your pet’s mouth needs attention.

Other things to watch for include:
🐾 Drooling more than usual
🐾 Chewing on one side
🐾 Dropping food
🐾 Red or bleeding gums
🐾 Pawing at the mouth or face
🐾 Preferring softer food or being off their food

Pets can be very good at hiding discomfort, so small changes are worth noticing.

If you are concerned about your pet’s mouth or eating habits, make an appointment with your vet.

Dogs cannot say, ‘this is a bit much for me’, but they are telling you all the same, in their own way.

Learning a few early signs of stress can help you give them space and move them away from the situation rather than asking them to push through it.
