☀️ It’s another hot one today! 🐶💙
As much as we’d all love to get out and enjoy the sunshine, our dogs don’t cope with the heat the same way we do.
At Pet HQ we’ve cancelled walks today because, for us, your dog’s welfare will always come first. ❤️
A few things you can do to help keep your dog safe over the next few days:
🐾 Swap daytime walks for early mornings or later in the evening.
💧 Keep plenty of fresh water available.
🧊 Frozen treats, ice cubes, stuffed Kongs, lick mats and even dog-safe fruit and veg are great ways to help them cool down.
❄️ Cooling mats, cooling collars and cooling coats are well worth having during warm spells.
🌳 Make sure they’ve always got somewhere cool and shaded to relax.
🚗 Never leave your dog in the car – not even for a couple of minutes.
🔥 Check the ground before every walk. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws.
⚠️ Keep an eye out for signs of heatstroke:
• Heavy, constant panting
• Excessive drooling
• Restlessness or struggling to settle
• Drinking far more than normal
• Bright red gums
• Vomiting or diarrhoea
• Weakness, wobbling or collapsing
If you’re worried your dog is suffering from heatstroke, move them somewhere cool, offer small amounts of cool water, wet them with cool (not ice-cold) water and contact your vet immediately.
Remember… dogs won’t miss one or two walks, but they can become seriously ill in this weather. Mental enrichment at home, a frozen Kong, a sniffing game or a lick mat is often a much better option than heading out in the heat.
Stay safe, look after your four-legged family members and enjoy the sunshine responsibly. 🐾☀️
