That's the closest comparison I can think of when trying to explain severe matting.
Many people see mats as tangled fur. Dogs experience something very different.

As mats tighten, they pull on the skin with every step, every stretch, and every time your dog lays down or gets up. Moisture, dirt, and debris can become trapped underneath, sometimes leading to skin irritation that isn't visible until the coat is removed.

The good news is that matting is preventable.

Regular brushing, routine grooming appointments, and asking questions when you're unsure can make an incredible difference.
