Want a better behaved dog by Christmas? Start in September.

Summer routines can knock training off track. September gives you a natural opportunity to get back into good habits.

You don’t need to change everything at once. Pick one thing you’d like to improve and start building better habits today.

A small reset now can make a big difference by Christmas.

Why is September better than January to start new things???

Comment the word September, and I'll post the video.

High-value rewards aren't bribery. Dogs have preferences, and the value of a reward matters to learning.

A positive reward prediction error is one reason that better-than-expected outcomes can strengthen learning.

Gundog photographer wanted!

I'm looking to update the photography on the Venture Dog Training website and would love to collaborate with a photographer who has a gundog breed.

I'm thinking training + photography — I'll provide some complimentary training for your dog, and in return we'd create some natural, high-quality images that I can use for my website and social media, while giving you some great gundog content for your portfolio.

You don't need to be an established professional — a serious amateur or someone starting out would be very welcome.

Based in Donegal. If you're interested, drop me a DM with some examples of your work and a little about your dog.

Please tag or share this with anyone who might be interested!

I don't often post about celebrities, but Dolly always seemed like something a little different.

She was hugely successful, fiercely ambitious, and completely comfortable being herself.

She never seemed to believe that her success required anyone else to lose.

A quote I have seen a lot is:

“Find out who you are and do it on purpose.”

There's something brilliant about that.

Believe in yourself.

Be kind to people.

Don't be afraid to be different.

And if you get the chance, use whatever success you have to make somebody else's life a little better.

Rest easy, Dolly.

“Collie brain” can engage incredibly quickly.

They're bred to notice movement, anticipate what happens next, and respond to subtle changes from their handler. That can make them fascinating dogs to train.

It’s also a good reminder that training isn't one-size-fits-all.

The techniques, reinforcers, and level of engagement that work brilliantly for one breed — or one individual dog — won't necessarily produce the same results with another.

Understanding what makes a dog tick is where good training starts.

If your idea of training starts with proving you're the boss, I'm probably not your trainer.

Dogs don't need a hierarchy lesson. They need clear communication, consistent boundaries, and skills that have actually been taught.

Leadership doesn't require intimidation.

Your dog doesn't need to greet every dog they see.

For some dogs, checking in with their person when another dog appears can be reassuring. It gives them a familiar point of reference and can communicate: “I've got you. You're safe.”

And I'd much rather see a dog calmly check in with their person than automatically pull towards every dog they see.

The goal isn't to make your dog ignore other dogs.

It's to teach them that dogs exist, but you are worth checking in with, even when the world gets interesting.

That can be a much more useful life skill than saying hello to everyone.
