Past his 12th Year of Life, Walking the Mountain with Dignity – Rodentáli Odin, a Versatile Legend
We are frequently asked how long a Great Pyrenees lives, and whether this independent-minded breed can be trained or athletically challenged. Instead of theories, we answer with the real lives of the dogs born in our kennel.
This video was sent by his owner, and we are incredibly grateful for it!
The clip features Rodentáli Odin, the versatile legend, who has already celebrated his 12th birthday. While his steps are more measured at this venerable age, and time has naturally left its mark on his movement, Odin still walks the mountain with pride, keeping his head high alongside his small canine companion.
Odin carries this extraordinary vitality in his genes: his dam was the wonderful Rodentáli Lizette, who lived right here with us in our kennel, brightening our everyday lives until the age of 12.5. This lineage is the ultimate proof that longevity and robust health are deeply embedded and inherited across generations in our bloodlines.
Odin is a highly trained, remarkably versatile dog. In his prime—thanks to his owner's dedicated work—he regularly participated in public demonstrations, conquered the gruelling obstacle courses of the Hard Dog Race multiple times as a true canine athlete, and moved with extraordinary agility on the agility course as well.
Why is this a massive achievement for a Great Pyrenees, and what does it prove to future owners?
• A Rock-Solid Temperament and Intelligence: Odin completely refutes the myth that the Great Pyrenees is just a lazy, stubborn giant. He proves that with the stable temperament selected in our kennel, combined with proper, respectful training, a Pyrenean is capable of intense focus on a fast-paced agility course just as much as in extreme obstacle races.
• The Triumph of Sound Anatomy: Agility and the Hard Dog Race demand immense physical effort, jumps, and sharp turns. For a giant-breed dog to have sustained such a serious sports career in his youth, and to still walk the mountain on his own feet with true dignity past his 12th year of life, is living proof of our conscious health screenings (hip and elbow dysplasia clearances). This is the ultimate proof of resilient, pure genetics over irresponsible back-yard breeding.
Odin’s story is the ultimate testament that dogs from the Rodentáli Kennel embody noble breed type, inner strength, and ironclad health.
We thank the owner and their family!
