⚠️[Frankie update] Screwworm removal demonstration!
🚧caution: it's really gross!
I normally avoid trying to show you guys the grossest parts of what sanctuary life is really like. However, I felt compelled to share this particular instance, because the screw worms are an epidemic that needs serious and educated handling. 🤓

After 9 days of doing this, Frankie hopefully is finally clean of these worms for good. Here we show you up close and personal the method of removal, extraction and cleaning. Re-sterilizing the wounds, cleaning it out, applying antiseptic, and repeating this process for as many days as it takes until they're all the way gone.

Franky: recovery process! ❤️

Little Frankie has been with us over a week, and in a long-term screw worm eradication process. Frankie is done incredibly well, and is the best case study we've ever seen for screw worms in their behavior. We've mastered removing them, and Frankie is on the path to recovery. It's taking a lot longer than I have ever seen before, but we know that it's working. Frankie will get better and he's very very happy and bursting with energy on a daily basis.

⚠️Puppy-with-hole-in-head update! 🤯
(Screwworm puppy pt. 2)
After two straight days of solid cleaning, removal of parasites, consistent sterilization and medication, the puppies wound is healing immensely well.

We are not always able to get dogs out to the vet, with such a limited size of staff and team we have. Going to the vet is a privilege, but our need to take care of dogs is daily.

We are so lucky to be able to fix this issue without needing to really spend any money, and this puppy is going to heal. I've got them on a deworming routine now, and if we're lucky enough to be able to get vaccines here in the near future we can vaccinate him too. 💉🐕🙏

⚠️trigger video:
A puppy has been dropped off today with an extremely severe, and horrific case of screw worms. We have dealt with parasites on this level, and reached out to the vest just to get a little more advice. I wasn't able to get responses from anybody on a Saturday, so I took to doing basic minor parasite removal surgery. After some hours of hard work, the puppies looking a lot better. He's currently in our care, eating, and showing healthy signs of brain and body functionality.

This was a hard one to show you guys, but a little voice inside me said it was important for people to see this. Thanks for supporting us and will update you on this puppy.

🚨 mama dog found in heat!
A dog who is obviously in heat has been being chased around by a pack of dogs in our area. We were put on the case, we're already aware of this dog, and we think she even came from one of our sterilization clinics many years ago.
It could actually be possible that this dog was sterilized, but the operation did not last because we saw this happen with two other dogs this year of our own. Blip, and bandita. Both of these dogs were sterilized previously, however they were able to get into heat and get pregnant to boot. This is what causes an excessive puppies at our Sanctuary this year. 😟
Let's stop this cycle of excessive births. Let's make more sterilization clinics happen in zunu. Please follow for more!

Canine Coronavirus! 🤯💉🐕
Did you know that's a thing??
We've had another wave of illness come through the sanctuary. It seems like we've already beaten the worst of it, but now we've seen every single virus that could possibly be captured in our sanctuary.

One of our doggies is still at the vet, hopefully we will be picking her up tomorrow, but the good news is all the doggies were treating at home are getting better.

We've had amazing help from and many others who helped donate so we can take dogs to the vet. Thank you for all of our supporters!

Bleep: Adopted!! 🥹🎉🐒
A dog who's already had a long story here, and arrived with her sister Blip, (previously Maya & Cacao), they came from a family who just had a newborn baby. They had originally rescued these pups, but when the newborn baby came they had to make room for her.

These dogs have been sponsored by those nice people for almost a year, but then finally their sponsorship ended. With incredibly good timing, an amazing man who works for the San Marcos municipality decided that he liked her.

It is very hard to find adult dogs good homes. Every time we do, it's like a small miracle was accomplished. We have many adults like bleep who need to find Happy homes. We also accept fosters!

📣😆Attention: seeking volunteers for "Rainy Season!" ☔
Normally in guatemala, May begins the big downpours of the rainy season. We are officially here! However, there's actually not that much rain, but a lot of sun and heat! ☀️😊👾
Starting immediately, we are accepting volunteers for the may, june, July season! We have two vacancies in our volunteer house, and we can use your help right away!

Normally our minimum is a 3 week minimum, however we are flexible to accept two-week volunteers specifically for the month of May. If you have interest in volunteering with us, please first apply on our work away or world Packers pages, and if you need help with that or want to ask directly, you can send us a message to our inbox.

For the love of my dogs...
These 2 dogs will stay with me forever.
Yes, my work here is to rescue dogs.
And yes, some of them I've chosen to keep.
As long as I live, these dogs will be with me.
The love of a dog causes many choices to be made.
The love of a dog made me choose to stay in Guatemala.
The love of a dog made me choose to ask for money to help them.
Then, the love of a dog caused me to help the street dogs.
Then, the love of this endeavor of helping as many dogs as possible, enabled the creation of the dog sanctuary.
Perros Libres exists, for the love of my dogs.
