🐾 Why Cats & Dogs Shouldn’t Be Food Animals

At Mishvet, we believe animal welfare and public health go hand in hand.

Cats and dogs are not suitable food animals because their slaughter is often outside the regulated systems designed for food-producing livestock. This can increase the risk of poor hygiene, meat contamination, foodborne infections and zoonotic diseases.

There are also concerns about veterinary drug residues, especially when treated animals have no proper traceability or withdrawal period.

Food safety starts with how animals are raised, inspected and slaughtered.

🚨 POT BELLY IN A DOG? DON’T IGNORE IT. 🐶

At first glance, a significantly enlarged abdomen might look like weight gain or simple bloating. But sometimes, there is something much more serious happening beneath the surface.

This patient presented with marked abdominal distension, and our veterinary team identified ascites, an abnormal accumulation of fluid within the abdominal cavity.

💉 We carefully removed the accumulated fluid to reduce the abdominal pressure and improve the patient’s comfort.
🔬 Samples of the fluid were also collected for laboratory analysis to help investigate the underlying cause.

Why does the cause matter?

Ascites is a clinical sign, not a disease itself. It can be associated with conditions affecting organs such as the liver, heart, or kidneys, as well as other serious diseases. That is why draining the fluid is only part of the management. Finding out why the fluid accumulated is crucial.

If your dog develops a rapidly enlarging abdomen, difficulty breathing, weakness, loss of appetite, or unusual discomfort, please seek veterinary attention promptly.

Early examination and proper diagnostics can make a significant difference.

🐾 A Life Saved, A Lesson Learned.

Lexy, a 3.8 kg Maltese, was rushed to Mishvet Veterinary Services after being in labor since the previous night. Unfortunately, the puppy was in a breech (backward) presentation, and it was unusually large—weighing 0.4 kg, making natural delivery impossible.

By the time Lexy arrived, the prolonged labor had resulted in a tear in her uterus, making the situation life-threatening. Our team immediately performed an emergency Caesarean section and repaired the uterine tear.

We are grateful that Lexy survived and is recovering well. Sadly, despite our best efforts, we could not save her only puppy.

💡 What can pet owners learn from this?

* Do not allow your dog to remain in labor for many hours without veterinary assessment.
* If your pet has been straining for more than 20–30 minutes without producing a puppy, or there is a gap of more than 2 hours between puppies with continued labor, seek veterinary care immediately.
* Toy breeds such as Maltese are at a higher risk of dystocia (difficult birth), especially when carrying a single, oversized puppy.
* Early intervention can mean the difference between life and death for both the mother and her puppies.

A fish gasping for life, cut open and thrown into hot oil while still conscious, is not a spectacle—it is suffering.

Whether an animal barks, purrs, sings, or swims, pain is pain. Fear is fear. No living creature deserves to endure unnecessary agony for our entertainment or as a culinary novelty.

Compassion is measured by how we treat the most vulnerable, including the animals that cannot speak for themselves. We can celebrate culture and cuisine without sacrificing our humanity.

Let us never become so desensitized that another creature’s suffering becomes a delicacy.

Choose compassion. Reject cruelty. Speak for those who cannot speak for themselves.
