For those of you who have experienced your ginger poo mix puppy turning blonde, this explains why

A useful picture to show fading gene in poodle! I have so many poodle mixes in classes with owners who are disappointed or confused that their cockapoo/labradoodle/Goldendoodle is changing colour.
This is Blossom (Standard Poodle) at 8 months old & 3 years old. Most reds and apricots in poodles fade so we were expecting it. However lots of owners of poodle mixes aren't. Some don't fade, but a lot do!
There is absolutely nothing wrong with your poodle mix's coat if it fades. It doesn't mean it was ruined by grooming or that they are ill. This is just a fading gene (untestable) that a lot of poodles carry. All colours can fade but it's seen most in reds, apricots and browns. This does apply to mixes too.
If you are buying a poodle or poodle mix, I'd advise never paying extra for red coats, you may get a few months of the darker coat but they could very well end up lighter than the puppy you passed on because he was a few shades lighter at birth. Ethical breeders do not charge more for desirable colours and its important anyone considering one of these breeds or mixes knows it's normally and perfectly okay when the coat fades out π©
If you have a poodle or poodle mix whose changed colour, we'd love to see a puppy Vs adult pic in the comments!
