Introducing Kasper an adolescent rescue from Rspca York and Rosie a Miniature schnauzer puppy. We took the opportunity to meet up for our dogs to do some 3 second polite greetings and settling at a cafe practice. It was busy so we chose a table at the edge so our dogs had space and time to process lots of new people, dogs and smells.

Kasper’s Journey 🐾

It’s hard to believe that Kasper has only been with us for three weeks.

Adopting an adolescent dog can sometimes feel a little overwhelming. There are moments when his youthful enthusiasm and boisterous nature challenge all of us — Kasper included!

But every day, he grows in confidence, learns something new and takes another small step towards understanding our human world. And while I’m teaching him, he’s teaching me too.

One of the things I’m passionate about sharing is that adopting an older puppy or adolescent dog isn’t something to be afraid of. With kindness, patience, consistency and the right support, these dogs can become truly wonderful companions.

Today’s lesson was loose lead walking, and I think Kasper is doing an amazing job so far. 🥰🐕🐾

One of the most important lessons for dog guardians to learn is that socialisation doesn’t stop when puppyhood ends.

Kasper is approximately 15–18 months old and has recently joined our family. Like every dog, visiting the vet will be a part of his life, so we’re taking the time now to help him build positive associations with the experience. It’s all about future-proofing his emotional wellbeing.

This morning we popped into Vets4Pets York for a quick social visit—no appointment, no treatment, just a chance to explore the practice, meet the lovely reception team, and enjoy a few treats. We even braved the scales for his very first weigh-in!

Today’s visit was simply the first step. Over the coming weeks and months, we’ll continue dropping in for short, positive visits so that the veterinary practice becomes a familiar and happy place, rather than somewhere he only visits when something is wrong.

A huge thank you to the wonderful team at Vets4Pets York for making Kasper feel so welcome.

Happy days… and well done, Kasper—you absolutely smashed it! 🐾💕
