🦙 🐑 🐐 SMALL HOLDERS DAY 🐐🐑🦙

It’s that time of the year where we recommend you vaccinate your small holdings against clostridial diseases.

We also advise worm and fluke counts to help to prevent worming resistance. If you can bring in a faecal sample by the 30th we can run these in house and arrange wormer if required!

If you would like some more information or to get your doses booked, please speak to the office.

Please note, this is a different vaccine to blue tongue!

Like every livestock keeper and vet in the country we are very worried about the rapidly rising case number of BTV-3 in the UK. This season there are currently 456 confirmed cases of BTV-3 and another 2262 under investigation. There are no cases of BTV-8 and thankfully at the time of writing no confirmed cases in this area, however this picture can change very quickly.

Please remember that this is a notifiable disease and is spread by midges and therefore virtually impossible to prevent it entering your premises through prevailing winds. Do go to the following government site to keep updated on the location of cases, but be aware there can be a serious delay in spotting a case to getting the conformation of a positive result from the laboratory.

The best protection is of course vaccination with a BTV-3 strain vaccine. However, the vaccines are not being made quick enough for demand and there is a serious backlog. Wood Farm currently has a considerable amount of vaccine on back order and this is being allocated on a first come, first serve basis to our clients only as soon as it arrives with us. Please ensure your names are added to our waiting list with the number of doses that you require so that your livestock do not miss out on this essential vaccination. Call or email our reception team as soon as possible if you have not done so already.

For clients interested there is a webinar tomorrow evening on how bluetongue virus is affecting dairy cattle in the UK with up to date information on the situation

🐈 Deceased cat 🐈

We had a cat brought to the practice last night in a bad way, it sadly passed away on arrival due to the extent of it’s injuries. We suspect she had been in a road traffic accident. The cat was female, brown and white, with no chip.

She was found in Hempnall. If you think you know who she might belong to, please let us know!

🐮 🚒 STUCK IN THE MUD🚒🐮

Yesterday Steph, Kate and vet student Leo were called to assist the fire brigade to rescue 2 cows who had got stuck in a ditch. We are happy to report both cows were successfully removed from the mud and after some tlc are back grazing with the rest of the herd, slightly muddier than their friends.

As always it was a pleasure to work alongside the fire service, and to give them a massive thank you for everything they did.

And last but not least we have Kate 💚

I started out in Practice a little over 24 years ago, completely naive to Veterinary Nursing having previously only worked in thoroughbred yards and for an equine rescue charity. Two & a half years later I had “earned my greens” by qualifying as a Registered Veterinary Nurse, and over the years I’ve been immensely privileged to have nursed some truly awesome patients across a wide range of species, and thrived in any aspect of nursing that was a little out of the ordinary!

I’ve worked with Hannah for the entirety of our careers, and am enormously proud of her and what we’ve achieved at Wood Farm. More recently, I’ve been involved in the administrative side of the Practice - primarily looking after our incredible team of nurses, but also being responsible for the more “boring” jobs involved in keeping the wheels turning - radiation supervisor, equipment maintenance & procurement, systems of work, liaising with our suppliers to get the best deals for our clients, etc etc…

However, I have Veterinary Nurse running through me like a stick of rock, still getting involved with “real nursing” when the need arises, and the buzz of being part of a team responsible for healing and returning a patient back into the care of their family (and the heartbreak of those who cannot be saved) will never leave me 💚
