🧬🧬NW&C with QI Health Testing 🧬🧬
DNA Health Testing clinic. Next clinic is Wednesday eve or 3/6/26. We are now taking booking for the next date.
Our first clinic this week went really well. The first 14 dogs have been health screened for relevant DNA diseases that will help prevent future problems.
Why DNA health test your breeding dogs? Good question?
Because with modern science we can gain a better understanding of each dogs genetics, screen for an extensive, 270 plus potential health risks (including those recommended by the KC for each breed *** pls check with us to ensure every single one of the KC required tests are included. Every so often an extra test may be required separately which will be extra )
50 plus coat colours, types and breed traits
With this knowledge we can then make an informed breeding decision to enhance the genetic health of the future puppies and avoid catastrophic matings. We then seek to improve breed lines for the future of our breeds.
The tests will identify if your dog is clear, a carrier or is affected of inherited diseases like PRA, Degenerative Myelopathy, Von.willebrand disease, ichthyosis etc etc. This gives you a choice then to choose a partner that has also been screened for diseases that your dog may be a carrier for. By mating to a clear dog, the puppies would only ever be clear or carriers and would therefore be unaffected by the disease.
Prevention is so much better than cure (or even fatality in worst case scenarios) It is very expensive owning and rearing a dog for its lifetime. To stop future puppy owners from having to fund expensive veterinary costs and watch their beloved pets suffer from diseases that could have easily been prevented is the only way forward.
It is also now well recognised that puppies reared and produced by breeders that health test their dogs before mating, find homes for their offspring much easier. Buyers are looking for puppies from health tested parents and will pay more for their puppy for their peace of mind.
So what are we offering?
We will DNA sample your dog at the appointment. We will fill out all the forms for you and send off the tests. Once the results are back, our DNA expert will go through your results with you and advise exactly what each test means to you. She can make recommendations for you on how to proceed and what to look out for.
The kennel club recommended tests for your breed can then be added to your dogs KC registration to show the tests have been carried out and the result.
Is this just for Pedigree or KC reg dogs? No! All dogs can be sampled and this will help many cross breeds to produce healthier lines for the future.
