We aren't fans of handrearing birds when there is no need. However, this little budgie was unfortunately abandoned by their parents and by the time they were found, they were the only one left alive, so we've stepped in to hand rear them. Egg is just over a week old and they are now doing really well after being somewhat blocked up from lack of moisture. Handrearing at this age is really difficult. They are tiny, vulnerable and sensitive. Things easily go wrong. And aside from that, rearing a lone chick with no avian social input is really hard on the chick and does not set them up well for integration later on. This is not a task we relish, therefore, but sometimes it is needed as a last resort. That said, Egg is really, really cute and it is a privilege to work with them!
