About Me 🩷
Hi, I’m Cat, the person behind What Cat Made.
I’ve been sewing for 19 years, and what started as a skill I learnt during an apprenticeship in a small sewing factory has grown into something I’m incredibly passionate about.
I spent 17 years working in that factory, where I learnt so much about sewing, curtains, blinds and soft furnishings. I also made some lifelong friends and memories that I’ll always treasure. During that time, I began taking on some of my own customers from home, making blinds and putting the skills I’d learnt into practice in my own little business.
In 2019, my life changed in the best possible way when I had my beautiful daughter. While I was on maternity leave, I decided to make a memory blanket from her tiny baby clothes. I took some photos and shared it on Facebook, never imagining where it would lead.
A friend messaged me asking if I could make one for her little one, and from there, What Cat Made started to grow.
Before long, I was making more and more memory blankets, and then my memory bears really took off too. Over the years I’ve changed and developed the styles, always trying to create something special while keeping my prices as affordable as I possibly can.
I love the idea that something as simple as a piece of clothing can hold so many memories. Turning those precious clothes into a blanket or bear means those memories can be kept, treasured and cuddled for years to come. 🧸
In 2024, I started a new job with Simon Boyd’s, making curtains and blinds again, but this time much closer to home. I’m lucky that sewing has continued to be such a big part of my life in so many different ways.
Around the same time, my daughter started dancing and joined her dance school’s troupes, eventually going on to have solo dances too. I soon discovered just how expensive dance costumes could be, and I found myself going down a rabbit hole wondering if I could make them myself!
That led me to a lovely lady in Doncaster who specialises in teaching people how to make dance leotards and tutus. I decided to give it a go, completed my first course in June, and I’ll be doing my next one very soon.
I’m really excited to keep learning, develop some new skills and see where this new adventure takes me.
One of my favourite things I’ve made so far is a modern costume for my daughter’s mermaid dance. Seeing her up on that stage wearing something I had created was such a proud and special moment for me. 🩷
And next up… a lyrical costume!
So, whether it’s a memory bear, memory blanket, curtains, blinds, alterations or something completely new, I love creating things that are personal, practical and made with care.
After 19 years of sewing, I’m still learning, still creating and still finding new things to fall in love with.
Thank you for supporting What Cat Made and for following along with my little sewing journey. 🧵🩷
