🐶 WEDNESDAY BREED SPOTLIGHT: COCKER SPANIEL 🐶

Those lovely ears came with a working job!

The “Cocker” in Cocker Spaniel comes from woodcock a small game bird these dogs were bred to find and flush out of cover.

That hunting background helps explain why many Cockers love following scents, exploring undergrowth and finding things. A walk can quickly become a full investigation of every hedge! 😂

Every dog is an individual, but giving them an outlet for their natural interests can make training much more rewarding.

🎓 Training tip: Try a simple “find it” game. Start with a few treats scattered in a small, safe area, then gradually make the search more challenging.

A wagging tail doesn’t always mean a happy dog!

Dogs can wag their tails when they’re excited, unsure or uncomfortable, too. The tail’s height, movement and stiffness all give clues, but you need to look at the rest of the dog as well.

A loose, wiggly body and soft expression can suggest a relaxed dog. A stiff body, tense face or turning away can tell a different story, even if that tail is moving.

🎓 Training tip: Don’t take a wagging tail as an invitation to stroke a dog. Give them space and let them choose whether to approach. If they move away, let them.

Think of the tail as one sentence in a much bigger conversation!

Adolescent & Rescue dogs who need a helping hand.
25th November - 4 week course 6.30-7.30pm

Puppy Classes - For pups up to 6 months old.
First vaccination required.
26th November - 4 week course 6.15-7.15pm

Follow on course - Level 1 For dogs over 6 months who have completed a puppy course.
26th November Troublesome- 4 week course 7.30-8.30pm

Here’s a training tip that sounds simple but is SO important.

Dogs repeat behaviours that work for them.

If your dog sits calmly and gets a treat, praise or access to something they want, they’re more likely to offer that behaviour again.

But if we only pay attention when they’re doing something wrong, we miss all those brilliant moments of good behaviour.

So this week, try catching your dog doing something you like lying quietly, checking in with you, walking nicely or waiting patiently and reward it!

Good behaviour deserves to be noticed too.

🐾🇮🇪 Something I’ve just discovered while I’m in Belfast!

Did you know that dogs in Northern Ireland need a licence? 🐶

Unlike here in Wales, where there isn’t a general dog licensing requirement, dog owners in Northern Ireland need to licence their dog each year.

The current cost is £12.50 for 12 months, and dogs must also be microchipped.

I honestly didn’t realise there was a difference between Northern Ireland and Wales!

🤔 So what do you think… should we have the same system here in Wales?

Would you be in favour of an annual dog licence, or do you think microchipping and responsible ownership are enough?

Starting early gives you the opportunity to build good habits from the beginning, work on focus, recall, loose-lead walking and calm behaviour, while giving your puppy positive experiences around people, dogs and everyday life.

🐶 Puppy training classes are a great way to give your puppy the best possible start and give you the skills to continue their training at home.
