2 weeks in with this unit of a boy!
Meet Kobe the Chinese Red Dog, human aggressive, dog aggressive and built like a grizzly.

He’s been a difficult boy to work with. Once you’re in his circle (which is a scary enrolment process) he’s fine, he’s happy to interact, work, walk and do the things you ask - if he’s happy, and that is where the problem lies.
The conflict comes when you ask him to do something he doesn’t want to do… he’s more than comfortable with telling you no and taking it to a serious level. He’s an intimidating boy who knows how to use his size and power to get what he wants - he is where he is because he’s learned that dominant behaviour = easy life. Telling this boy, ‘actually you will do what I ask’ isn’t easy! Combine this with his intensity, everything is at such a high level. Training, play, everything and you have a very challenging training journey.
This being said he’s making great progress, and I love the test that this boy is giving me.
I might need counselling after his residential is finished, but the most important thing is he’s doing well and headed in the right direction.

This is what’s wrong with the dog industry right here!
Having a passion and backing it up with gaining knowledge absolutely sets you on the right path - but an online course doesn’t create an expert - IN ANYTHING!
If you needed surgery but your mate rocked up and said “don’t worry, I’ve been playing operation since I was 7 and I’ve just done a ‘be an expert surgeon course on groupon (reduced from £10,999 to £25)” so it’s all good - would you get the bread knife out and crack on…? I doubt it!
There’s a huge difference between loving dogs, and understanding them! The problem I’m seeing is dogs coming to me that have encountered ‘trainers’ that ‘are qualified’! Failed because of ego with no experience.
I’ve got a BSc Hons and went on to study a MSc in animal behaviour - guess how much of that theoretical knowledge helps when you have a 45kg human aggressive dog coming at you…
Courses are great for expanding your knowledge and fuelling your passion - but they don’t make you an expert ready to take on complex cases that have potentially severe consequences!
I also don’t actually know what a dog expert is… I just recognise that the best trainers I know tap into something you can’t teach. It’s something you build over years, not weeks sat in front of a computer!
Working with dogs you will be humbled everyday and only time and patience can show you this.
To anyone interested in being a trainer, find someone you can see is exceptional at what they do (not good - they’re are some truly brilliant trainers out there - learn from them) and ask them if you can help and observe.
Volunteer at shelters, do every job there, put the dogs first and listen more than you speak 🙏🏻
Our goal should be the same, a better dog better life - cliche I know - but cliches are cliches because they’re true 🙏🏻
